  1. The TIVO like recorders like those for satellite receivers or cable use amazing compression. They are able to store 30-100 hours of video with no quality loss.

What sort of compression are they using and when will the general public have it?

    hi neo,

    none !!

    * They are basically just taking the MPEG-2 source and "transfering" it to
.. the TIVO unit's hard drive.

    * Then, the TIVO unit is doing it's fancy work, to re-display it, just as your
.. satellite receiver would - exactly the same way. Hence, no re-compression
.. or compressoin (other than the MPEG-2 itself, which has ben compressed
.. but from the source ie, DirecTV)

Just look at your TIVO as if it were your Satellite unit. You have two sat
    receivers sitting near you.

So, when you look at your TIVO, instead of "directly" accessing the MPEG-2
from the sat source and displaying it to your TV set, it is accessing it from
    the TIVO's harddrive unit.

There ARE those peoples that can take the MPEG-2 from the TIVO unit and
transfer the hard drives' MPEG-2 contents to a DVDR/RW disk. But, I don't
remember the website that details this process. I'm sure someone will
know, and direct you to it, for reading or watever.

    That's it !!

Well, with a 30GB hard drive, TIVO can store up to 30 hours to video (in its lowest quality mode), that's TRUE but there is quality loss there.
You need to watch on a large screen TV, all the high motion scenes shows macroblocks. If you set it to BEST or HIGH quality mode, then this does not happen but then you can store less hours.
