I'm trying to convert a mkv to a mp4 to play on my xbox 360. I used gotsent (i have all the codecs) to convert a mkv file and the files it generated were a .mp4 file that is only 1 kb big and a movie.h264 file that is 2,000,000 kb big. When i try to open the mp4 file i get an error message. Am I doing something wrong here or is there something else i should be doing.

    Thanks in advance

What is the video and audio codecs in the mkv? Identify with mediainfo.

    YOu can also try MKVBoxer.

  4. Are you using the newest beta version?

There are other approaches as well. Ripbot264 works using the "console" profile.

You can also manually do it using this guide http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mkv_content_on_xbox_360.cfm

You have to make the format compatible with xbox 360, it's finicky on what file types it will accept

    HTPC. No conversions. .

It looks like your mkv should work fine with gotsent, did you try LATEST beta? And did you try mkvboxer?

I got a question. GOTsent converts my .mkv file perfctly to a .mp4. Now i wanna play it on my 360, so i change the extension to .wmv, burn it as a data disc then put it in my xbox. Now the problem is my xbox doesnt play it. It reads that its there, but beside the name there is a red circle with a line going across it. Ive played already converted mp4's on it before so its not the system. I think im missing something when im converting, mybe a codec. Do you know what i am doing wrong?

    Thanks!

MP4s aren't the same thing as WMVs. Are you saying you've renamed .mp4 files to .wmv in the past and the 360 had no problems playing them? Does the 360 play .mp4 files directly?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

And you are sure the video in .mkv is H.264/x264 ?

Yes. Ive downloaded Superbad in mp4, changed it to .wmv and it played on my 360. I changed it cuz i read that XBOX only plays wmv and not mp4. mp4 is for PS3, although i havent tried burning a mp4 directly and playing it. Maybe i will and ill see what happens!

It does say AVC, which is synonymous with H.264, and it being level 5.1 it's highly likely it's x264 since that's its default setting.

I've never tried GOTSent since I don't encode for an XBox. But upon reading its description, it doesn't re-encode the MKV file.

There may be the problem right there - MP4 natively doesn't support AC3 audio (at least not without a "hack"). You would have to re-encode the audio to something like AAC (I'm assuming the H.264 video stream is XBox 360 compatible.)

You can demux the H.264 video stream using MKVExtract, then mux it with the encoded AAC stream into MP4 using MP4Box.

Sorry i've been away from my post for awhile and thanks for the replys. To get you guys up to date, I've tried converting my file with gotsent again and this time i got working mp4 files..somewhat... I got 3 files this time, the first one was fine, the second one had the first's video but the sound continued from the first part, and the third was the same as the seconds. Wierd...Still no luck converting this file. Just so everyone knows, what i'm trying to do is play hd videos from my xbox 360 without the buffering. I can play my mkv file through tversity but it always buffers and the video quality suffers. If anyone else has any suggestions, i would be glad to hear them.

  15. Obviously gotsent isn't working for you.

Did you try the guide posted above? Manually doing it isn't that hard and there are screenshots to guide you.

Even if you successfully muxed into an .mp4 (with converted ac3 => aac audio) you will find that your xbox360 doesn't support the video you originally referred to, because the video was encoded with AVC Level 5.1 profile according to the mediainfo you posted. Xbox only supports 4.1. Translation: you have to re-encode your video. gotsent doesn't re-encode video.

Don't forget xbox only supports 2 channel aac (not 5.1 sound)

All this information was posted in the links I posted above.

If you want an easy way to convert your video use ripbot264. Use the "console" profile for AVC Level 4.1. Make sure you specify 2-channel aac audio. Note you will lose some audio quality and video quality because you are re-encoding both with a lossy format.

    Good Luck
