reez:
First of all, since they're beta-testing all this, clicking the preference does not do much yet. I think they're merely trying to find out how many would actually switch it on. For me it has no effect whatsoever setting it to high quality. Probably location based like you wrote..

Second, I don't think stage6 will return. DivX has simply lost its quality race from mkv/mp4 and x264 (which is a free codec, and ultimately winning each and every video-codec test out there). If you've ever used MeGUI and Yamb, you'll know the power of x264 is unbeatable. Stage6/DivX were slowly realizing that they can't win the battle from an open source codec, so they shut down their biggest loss machine: A cost intensive datatransfer-eating video-website.

In YT account settings, on the bottom right is "Video Playback Ability"

There are three settings:

* Choose my video quality dynamically based on the current connection speed.
* I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video.
* I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it's available.

btw, it doesn't seem to be working yet wink.gif

edit: Just realized it's basically the same as Reez'. Well, you can get to it from your own account settings.

The setting seems to work on videos using the VIP/dcad player or whatever that's called.

Since creating a new Firefox profile a couple weeks ago, I've been seeing what everyone else sees, low quality unless I force it with fmt. The above were the first I've seen since that didn't require the hack, just the setting. Videos using the normal player still show up in low quality unless I use fmt=.

I found a video with a normal player that works with the playback settings: http://youtube.com/watch?v=66w7a1U1f-M

Another one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=l8nuwLjJQFY

It works but for example the first video has 3 formats, the low one (320x240) , the higher quality one (that plays automatically with the playback settings and I guess with &fmt=6) and the last one (adding &fmt=18 ) which is stereo. The strange thing is that the last one is not in mp4

How do you think they decide to do the fmt=6?

Anybody know the BEST settings to get the best quality playback on this new YouTube HQ deal? My videos are now being converted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3RZfbxNfj4 but I still seem to be having issues with the sound varying in volume in the playback... and the quality of the low res versions looks worse than when I uploaded at 320x240 with no conversion to HQ.

I am on a Mac and currently output my video at 640x480 H.224 2mbs 30fps aac vbr 128 best

Should I up the mbs to 4mbs perhaps? Should I double the bitrate on the audio?

Thanks guys!

I'd double the audio. You'll barely notice the size increase.

reez, I'll contribute! I create 3 videos a week, compress them, upload them to YouTube and they are seen over 1 and a half million times each week. So I have plenty I can contribute (I think). What would you like to know? And feel free to ask me anything if I can be of help in any way.

I did give you my settings, though I meant to say h.264. Do you guys find that putting the bit rate as high as possible yields a better final quality on YouTube? Like if I output my vids at 6mbs vs 2mbs, would I notice an increase in final quality?

Also.. if I should not be asking these questions here, I apologize.. I was excited to find a group of people who were knowledgeable about this stuff... but if I should not be here, can you recommend someplace else for me?

Thanks so much!

reez.. Wired posted an article yesterday about this here: http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Watch_Higher_Quality_YouTube_Videos and maybe they got it from you guys.

And YouTube posted the information about the high quality videos today for everyone to see as well: http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=ponKL3LTyr0 But you are right... I found your information via Google search.... so I guess if you want to create a closed environment and not share your information, then you should only make this forum accessible by members and make sure Google doesn't index it.

Anyway... back to YouTube.. I noticed that 128k AAC gives me audio that seems to vary in volume when played back via the YouTube HQ setting... I wonder why that is...
Here is the video.. it has a static-y sound and the volume seems to vary quite a bit.

The audio is clipping (loudest peaks are being chopped off). The Cory vid is clipped as well. Try backing off the volume in the editor before encoding. If YT is doing level control, then it might be on their end.

We're making these streams available on certain videos, based upon the source file uploaded to us,

Anyone find out what this type of source file is? MP4 perhaps?

I noticed that .wmv files has the "Watch this video in higher quality." button , some mp4's have it too but almost all .wmvs has preference.

Have you all seen youtuber Corey "Mr.safety" from SMPFILMS and CharlesTrippy giving all the Credit of the discovery of the &fmt=18 function to youtuber "iGianMC" ???? He claims to have discovered the function because he is a computer genius ....wait a minute, I got to throw up...cough *Liar* cough .Now, who is this new girl on this board ?listen missy don't be posting links showing off your lack of underwear. This is a respectable forum.

lol @ the underwear comment.

Half of my uploaded videos are in .wmv format but apparently the link to watch the vid in higher quality isn't evident. Of course I can always put &fmt=18 or 6 in the address to force the HQ version to show.

Oh and it seems your videos are automatically playing in 6 format by YouTube hotforwords, and not the mp4 h264 18 format.

Lack of underwear? Nobody's not wearing underwear!

I only upload in h.264 mp4. If I upload at 640x480 then all my videos get the HQ link on the bottom option. If I upload at 320x240 as the previous 112 videos were done.. then they don't get the HQ option. So I think YouTube is making the HQ determination based on the original size (dimensions) of the uploaded video.

Thanks benrtc about the clipping... I do record my videos pretty close to the red in the volume.. so I'll bring them back as opposed to increasing the bitrate on the audio.

LAWL!..you know what's funnier? after watching some of their vids you can tell that they don't usually make vids like this..there have been a SLEW of nifty YT hacks that have been made public(and go straight to top viewed) but THIS is the one they just "HAVE to talk about"

AND something a bit embarrassing for us. Videohelp user dtfinch left a loserish comment on iGianMC's profile saying that he did it..i mean if you're going to do something then do something BIG..not leave a little comment on a page.

BUT ANYWAY! thanks for the info ALEXA you're AWESOME!!!

Now this is strange, my latest video, an 104 minute 1935 German propaganda movie, doesn't go to HQ anymore if you put &fmt=18 behind its link, but &fmt=6 again. I don't know what codec it is in now. But I see quite some compression artifacts, while the source is very good (DVD -> 640x480 Xvid with around 1000-1200kb/s video bitrate).

Note: I uploaded it only 2 days ago, and probably because of the large size of the movie it showed up atleast 18 to 24 hours later in my videolist. Maybe &fmt=18 will work in a day or 1-3 too but it just takes a while because of the very large size of the movie.

Note 2: If go to the &fmt=6 version of the movie, I see a link where you can go to the low quality version of the movie, while there isn't one to the HQ.

Well, untill quite recently (I think), youtube allowed director, guru and other non-standard account types to upload videos of unlimted length. Now they changed it. New director/guru/musician etc accounts won't get unlimted length anymore but old ones (like me) kept it.

Hey dtfinch, clearly it was a group effort by yawoo, me, you, and the feedback from all users in this thread:
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic336882-390.html#1814383

But yeah, pretty low to see this Gian guy bragging about something he stole! He probably got it from my blog here, or this thread on videohelp, which by the way has been viewed almost 20000 times (see how that compares to the other posts in this forum...).

By the way, did you guys know about http://66stage.com/ already?
