Regarding Philips DVP 5960 (euro version "5960/12")....
When I try to play avi's from an attached 100GB 2.5" hard drive, the playback is very stuttery. Audio is continuous, but picture keeps freezing every few seconds, then speeding up to catch up with audio. This is one of those mini HDs that are powered from the USB port.
Playing from an attached 1GB flash thumb drive works fine.
Also, playing from an AC-powered external works fine.
I would love to know if anyone has had any success (i.e., non-jerky playback) using an external drive which does NOT require a separate power source.
The HD in question is made by "zaapa" -- so anyone hoping to use it for this purpose, it don't work!
(I have tried several firmwares; none of them get around this issue.)
thanks!

No the USB port on the 5960 can only supply enough power for the thumb size drives. The large Hard Drive enclosure's need more power. That is why the video is jumpy. All the external drives I have connected to the 5960 have had a seperate power supply. Good Luck
