    Hi there.
    I have a question...

I have a MKV file, and I want to convert it to AVI, buy, without loosing any quality.

I tried the SUPER converter, output set to AVI and direct stream video and audio.

The software does this very quicky of course, but the final AVI file, the new one doesnt open in WMPlayer, nor Vegas (says Unknown), but DOES play in VLC player.

What other converter can I use to do this for the AVI file not to be bad?

    Thanks!

  2. Why do you want to convert it?

What video & audio codecs? use mediainfo

Not all video & audio formats are compatible with AVI container

As poisondeathray mentioned, not every video and audio format out there is compatible with the AVI container. The h.264 AVC video that's common in MKVs these days isn't, to the best of my knowledge. The ac3 audio might not be compatible as well, but I couldn't say for sure.

Yes, use MKVExtractGUI to extract the raw video stream from the MKV. Be sure to install mkvtoolnix and MKVExtractGUI to the same folder.
Also note that the video stream will probably extract as a file with the extension .264, as I recall, or another extension avc2avi isn't expecting. Just rename the extension.

but now, my DTS stream wont play in WMP, nor my dvd player. but DOES in VLC.... any idea how to do this?

Run the video you just created through GSpot or MediaInfo (in Tree View) and post the resulting information here (a screenshot of the resulting GSpot window, for GSpot). Blank out the file and folder names, if you want.

Note that standalone DVD players that can play DivX/Xvid are usually very picky about the videos you can play on them. Some of the conditions you'll probably want to make sure the video doesn't exceed can be found in this post.
If you're not sure whether or not your DVD player supports DTS in AVI (heck, I'm not sure that's valid in an AVI, myself, which may be why WMP and some other players refuse to play it - VLC is also designed to allow playing of damaged/incomplete AVIs, and may just be valiantly playing what it finds (it can certainly play both those audio and video formats...)), try re-encoding the audio stream to a standard stereo MP3 and see if the player doesn't refuse it.

    Ok this is the screenshot:

Name:	screenshot.jpg

I saw the post of divx conditions.

    Now my method is this:
    installed:
Virtualdub, Super converter, MKVextract y el Mkvtoolnix

    1. wizard of mkvextract to h264 and separeted audio files
    2. change extention to *.264
    3. avc2avigui to get into AVI.
Now I have the AVI with no AUDIO.
    4. Compress to xvid, small to 720x480 16:9 with Super.
xvid 6000k (but leave the new xvid avi file with 2000k dont know why)
    720x480 16:9,
    Audio DISABLE.
    5. Virtualmod - no xvid compression, but to add audio streams. the original ones, DTS and AC3s.

In my DVD player, the DTS appears on the audio list channels, but its not played.

I also try to make a 1000k xvid, to test, because of that post you gave me with common problems.

So... I could use the PopCorn audio converter and convert DTS to AC3, but I dont wont that. I want the
original audio in my new xvid...

    waiting for an answer please...
    thanks.

  19. What model is your DVD player ? Does it support DTS?

Open the AVI file in graphstudio, what does it show? What decoder are you using for DTS on PC? (e.g. AC3Filter, ffdshow etc...)?

Stop using illegal downloads and you wont have all those issues.

  27. If you have video and audio that are valid in an avi container then use VirtualDub with the mkv plugin http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/Matroska/index.html to open the mkv file.

Select Direct Stream Copy on video and audio, and save your avi file.
