Some harddisk is found are (I can buy these localy):

- LACIE Harde schijf multimedia LaCinema Premier 500 GB USB 2.0
- STOREX CLUB MPiX-355 500 GB USB 2.0

Does anyone know these or have any suggestion, remarks?

I don't know what you mean when you write "must play subtitles/xvid" because this, is software/decoder related, not hard disc related.
For the average customer, the best brands for a hdd are (in the order):
western digital, seagate, maxtor, iomega, lacie
If it's external you should consider one that has a firewire 400 and/or 800 port which is better indeed than USB. (stability/reliability) -
I think something went wrong with my first post. It is missing some text.
What I also wrote was:
It has to be a hd that can be connected directly to a TV set to play the movies, music,...
So the hd must play the most common file-types -

is it Fat32 i.e short and inscrutable file names? That is the failing of most of these things.. plus not really recognizing large hard drives. Might want to try rhapsody or xbmc or really best, an old computer with silent fans and silent this and that. What about a cheap laptop with tv out? or an Lcd with vga in..

I have just bought a MediaGate-35 with HHD (18months old on E-bay) it does play most formats directly into the TV. I have not received the unit yet, however, I am expecting to get it tomorrow. It is a cheap unit compared to others, from research, almost all the reports are extremely good.

I use a 3 buffalo link theaters but my pal wanted a similiar system so we bought 2 of these devices and it does just about everything. You can play media from your PCS with SMBs, plus you can install a sata hard drive, they can also be used as NDAS devices. They play a wide range of media files plus it will play DVD ISO files with menus and all.
