there is no best, only what works best for you.

for me, it is Vegas. it gives mo complete control over every aspect. it is a video editor, not a slideshow program.

I too believe the best Slideshow app is a good Video Editor. My preferance is Premiere, but you can get excellent slideshows using Wax2, wich happens to be free.

I use ProGold but I do so primarily because of the panning and scanniing capability. In my opinion a slideshow of timed pictures and some music is boring compared to one in which pictures are panned.

A freeware app that has the panning feature is SSMM (Slide Show Movie Maker).

I often combine several apps to procude one longer slideshow (i.e. one song/slideshow will be done with product-x, another with product-y, etc...)

These are some of my favorites because the save time by letting the software generate the transitions and music (but sometimes you need to use an editor to make certain customizations that the "automatic" programs cannot do):
    -MemoriesOnTV (codejam.com)
    -Muvee AutoProducer (muvee.com)
    -ProShow Gold (photodex.com)
    -CD & DVD PictureShow (ulead.com)
-VideoStudio 10 Plus (from Ulead -- adds video editing to the mix, and also has an auto-music generation tool)

    Regards,
    George

Haven't tried many, but DVDSanta was very easy to use and produced all I needed for a slide show with cool transitions and background music.
