So do you always leave some space so that you don't burn on the edges of blank dvds???

I don't always buy name brand discs so I'm trying to remember to encode to 4gb instead of the single layer limit. Though of course I don't always.

i always use high quality japanese made media.. so i have no problems burning to the maximum capacity of the disc..

i learned my lesson many years ago about cheap dvd-r media..

i've got movies from 5 years ago that are 4.37gb and i can still make copies of them without a problem.

although when backing up movies, i always keep the main menu, because it is a backup i'm aiming for the highest video quality..

i use clonedvd2 to transcode my movies now, and i usually remove extras & additional audio tracks to get 100% video quality or the highest video quality available.. sometimes that will leave me at something like 4.1gb or 4.2gb..

Even though I use good media, I always subtract about 200Mb from the DVD when I backup using DVDShrink. Better safe than sorry. And I don't think -200Mb is going to be missed.

Whatever it takes. If it's too much, I add more discs. Or I jump to a DL.

I've always burned the full 4.37GB capacity and always used good media. I started off using Riteks, Now use Taiyo Yuden discs. Never had a problem so far.

I suppose I could have phrased it "do you burn under the limit of the disc" but it seemed like everyone understood

And actually at least for cdr's you can overburn. I've never bothered to find out if you can overburn a dvdr. The point was asking if people just encode to the maximum of the disc and not worry about possible read errors at the edges

  10. i burn whatever i need as far as the disc capasity goes, i generally dont do things like throw in dummy files and such to push data towards the outer edge of the disc, and if a disc happens to push the limits of the dvdr, then so be it.....i just try to keep good care of my discs....
