What burner are you using? What do you mean by messed up? Have you tried to play it on other DVD player? When in doubt, take you burned DVD to a store that has DVD players on display. Try it out and see the results. Surf this site to see if your player is compatible with the media you are burning. Also try a different burning program, Record Now or EZ CD Creator 6. I have used all with no problems. More information...please!

But, if you see pixelations after you burn, then I have to question your burning method/software. Now you mentioned that MOST of your backups don't have pixelations using the same softwares. Then it could be your media or DVD Player. You could try out another brand of DVDRs.
Always troubleshoot from the beginning. Like also, when you rip your movie to your harddrive and preview it, did you get pixelation? Now, if your standalone can accept DVDRWs, use them in your testing so that you don't make any expensive beer coasters. -
I have a suggestion. Try using DVDshrink which is free and then burn using a DVD-RW disc so you don;t waste any media. I always check the final files out first with PowerDVD.

I didn't have time to give more information cause after I typed it up I went to bed. Soz,

I always preview the movies with PowerDVD because if I don't, Smart-Ripper won't start. Then, I open up SR and chose all files to rip with my Pioneer DVR-105 4X burner into my HD. After, I use DVD2ONE (I like it because this prog start the movie right away, is there something else that's smiliar). Finally, I use NERO to burn the movie.
I was watching "WE WERE SOLDiERS" earlier, it was going well until at the last couple of chapters and the pixelation started. I took it out and play it on my computer and it was fine.
I also watched "WASABI" and the entire movie was error free.
I hated it when I don't know sh*t, -
i'm serious man, i wouldn't touch that media with a 100ft pole. even the 'economically minded' (cough cough) people generally stick to accu or ritek g03 at a MINIMUM. and these are MUCH better than princo. unless ure giving at these discs for free for band promos or something of that nature, u are going to want a much higher quality disc. ive read of MANY people who have had strange problems with playback and whatnot have them solved simply by switching to better media.
i'll give an example. ive burned over 100 dvds, 50 accus, 20 taiyos, 20 apples, 5 maxell, 5 memorex, 25 ritek g03s, etc etc. ive used a variety of difft programs to author them and have noticed differences in playback amongst the media that seem media related. accus at worst will get skippy, ive got one that will occasionally get out of audio sync at the very beginning, but not often. occasionally they have issues with chapter breaks (misses it and skips ahead). taiyos are really good, at most i'll get one pixelation (1/3 second max.) per movie and no pausing or chapter issues. the apples are the best, ive never had *ONE* single issue with an apple dvd-r, not one pause, not one hesitation, not one pixelation *EVER*. the maxell ...ehhh, i watched one and at one pointed i noticed > 20 pauses / 5 minutes (minute like 1/2 sec skips). now interestingly enough, *ALL* these discs playback nearly perfectly in my computer.
now while princo might work great in some people's players, in all honesty its not going to work as well long term and on a wide variety of other players if u were to say, go down to best buy and watch ur disc on a bunch of standalones. stick with quality and u dont have to worry about 'is it the disc' there's enuff problems with dvd burning that wondering if its ur media shouldnt be one of them. at the very, very least, stick to ritekg03 or maybe accu, but princo...

In response to the original post:
I'd agree to test the bad-media theory by reburning on a DVD-RW as a test. Tests are good. Of course, that's assuming your player accepts DVD-RW discs. I also find DVDDecrypter MUCH better than the older SmartRipper. I retired SR for DD some months back.
In response to other comments made above:
PRINCOS ARE FINE: I've burned over 2,000 Princo discs with maybe 20 coasters, most of which were my fault. That's only a 1% fail rate. And those are for both 1x and 2x versions. But yes, if you want the best, go get some APPLE discs. Maxell are okay for PS2, but kinda blah on standalones. Pioneer make the Apples, or at least they used to, so avoid the overpriced Pioneer discs. I also suggest the gold-topped or blue-topped OptoDiscs.
Know that bad burns can be the burner's fault just as much as the disc's fault. Skipping movies can also be caused by corrupt files being burned on the disc.
At least Princo has enough sense to coat their discs on top. Come talk to me in 5-10 years about your uncoated Accu and Riteks that are HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE to scratches. Discs are more vulnerable from the top than the bottom. (FYI: I already learned this fact the hard way back when CD-R technology first came out, and we were so quick to buy the cheapest crap available. I throw my old uncoated CDs away a lot these days. They didn't even last 10 years, and I take excellent care of my stuff.) -
I hate posting when I can't add something truly constructive to the thread (no, really), but I wanted to comment on the disc "bashing." I hope this doesn't go too far off topic:
We ARE talking about backing up movies that we own, right?
...
RIGHT?
The point, then, is that we are looking for a "disposable" media -- one that we can handle without care, let our nieces/sons/etc. touch and scratch up -- on which we can backup our movies. By all means such discs should be inexpensive and maintain a short life.
I don't care if my Ritek copy of "Toy Story" lasts 10 (or even 5) years -- I feel much safer having it out around my friends' children (or even myself) then I would the original DVD.
If it's cheap and works on your DVD player(s), then that's the best media for backing up the DVDs you own. Heck, in 10 years, we might all be backing up our entire DVD collections to Blu-Ray v3.0 or something!
When I edit and author the video of my wedding to DVD, yes, I'm going to use the best discs I can find, and probably make more than one copy of it. But for "safety" copies, ones for personal use so that the original stays safe, I go cheap.
That's not to say that art's problems isn't his media -- just that there's no reason to NOT be "economically minded."
OK -- that said, I have used DVDShrink 1.03 on two movies (including Toy Story), and so far have found it fast, easy, and the final product very viewable. I have used other apps previously (and will continue to use DVDxCOPY for my most favorite movies), but Shrink is free and fast, so it may be worth your time to try it out and see if your problems go away. But keep using the cheap media!
Another long-winded post from Karate Media (the OTHER cheap media)
