-

I know this sounds wierd but go to Aldi's for 700 bucks you get
p4 2.6 ghz
256 ddr333
120 GB HD (7200 rpm)
533 Fsb
GeForce 4 TI something (i know its dual display)
19 inch monitor
(Mouse and keybord i think)\
(cf sd and memory stick front slots)
(i think some sort of composite video in on the front)
definatly worth checking outYou win some, and you lose some, and some get rained out... -
Buy too cheap and you'll end up with just that, problems. Processor without a doubt AMD. P-4s, anything with a 533 bus will increase your cost. Harddrive size is a must. Nothing less than an 80gig. I better stop, you really never siad what you plan to do with it other than not gaming. Stable is what you want. Just don't buy some off brand motherboard that has a history of problems. And never buy a CPU thats not in the box. I've seen too many de-laminated chips lately from people who bought off the internet(unboxed cpus). These are called orphans from the factory and almost always have a defect. Companies buy them up and resale. Cheap to me means between 750.00 and $1,000.00. Deteremine what you want it to do and go from there. More info please, then we'll direct you to what and where to buy. Okay?

What country are you located in ?.
And by cheap.......how cheap.....price range ?. -
i plan to spend about 300bucks or less. that all i have.
i live in usa florida.
i would like asus mobo with ddr ram and AMD cpu between 1800-2400, can some one give me a direct link to the cheap places that would be helpful. thanks. -
If you mainly want to encode video cpu speed IS everything.

82 bucks for the mb, 82 bucks for the cpu - 3ghz doesn't get any cheaper. -
It's very hard to get an AMD 1800-2400 CPU, good ASUS motherboard, and DDR memory for $300.00. You are also hoping to get a case, CD Rom drive, floppy drive, hard drive, modem, and video card. You might start by checking your local newspaper want ads, someone is always upgrading their computer and is willing to get rid of the old cheap. Also check out these sites; www.askacs.com and www.compgeeks.com

I would suggested saving up some money and do it right. How do you expected to buy a DVD-burner as well for that kind of money? You did say you wanted to DVDs as well? Even at budget prices good parts for an entire system would be double that 300 dollar price tag you said you had. And then it would be just that a budget computer. You'll be disaapointed in the end with a headache. Save up and do it right. I made the mistake you are going to make many years ago and haven't ever forgot it!

thanks everyone for helping
i already have sound card, cdrom, dvd rom, hardrive.
all i need is a board, cpu, video card, and case.
i like the idea of celeron 2.0 ghz overclock to 3ghz.
more help would be appreciated -
best bet would be an AMD Athlon XP 2000 for 90 bucks. Then get an NForce motherboard and it will have built in Geforce2, ethernet, and surround sound. Im not sure about the price of these boards but check newegg.com. You could get 256mb ddr for what probably 50 bucks and a Mid Tower Case for about 60 or 70.
Thats as close as your gonna get to 300. -
I got my P4 2.4G with integ motherboard (with on board video, USB2.0
and LAN) for under $300 (from Fry's) last Oct. You should be able to
get a better deal now. I want integ motherboard for steability and
compatibility.
512M DDR from Fry's is about $50 after rebate now.
I got my computer case last Oct from softwareandstuff.com for $35
(4 ext and 3 int bays with power supply). -
Get a epox 8rga+ mobo,unless you already have a vid card,then get a 8rda+,512 of corsair pc2700,on sale at new egg,and a xp 1700 which will overclock to a 2600+ with ease.

Here's what I was going to do months ago.
Motherboard based on Intels 845g (not gl or any other variant) chipset
A 1.8GHZ celeron processor
256MB DDR RAM
That's just me on a cheap budget. I already have an ATX case and monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.... -
I just found the following deals on web.
1.7G Celeron + case + power: ~$160
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/dskbs_p4mfp533cel17.html
2.0G Celeron + case + power: ~$190
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/dskbs_p4mfp533cel2.html
512M DDR: ~$45 after $20 rebate.

Jacknjt, what do you intend to do about an OS (operating System) ? I would highly recommend staying away from bare bones kits as suggested by others as well. At least 3 times a week some youngster and sometimes older big kids bring in some kit they bought on the internet who tried to put it together couldn't and expect me too. I direct them to the door. As I said before, some things you can skimp on others you cannot. Buy a proven stable motherboard to support your current CPU as well as upgrades down the road. Buy a pure AMD not a Duron or a Pure P-4 and not a Celeron. Budget CPUs are just that, budget perfromance as well. Buy what you can now and keep adding to that over a fews months until you can get the whole system put together. Dealer cost on Win XP Pro is $86.00 here with a tax ID number. Cost is not always the best focus on which to make a decision.

Shuttle SS-50, SS-41, SS-51. You need go no farther than one of those. Slam a hard drive and a burner and some memory and processor of choice in it, and you are done. Works great, and very small. Also look into a Via Epia M-10000 or Epia M-6000 or M-9000 for slightly slower CPU.
I have an SS-50 and Epia M-9000, both are more than capable of downloading, and surfing, and ripping MP3's and burning! I use the SS-50 for work with DV files and converting to mpeg and burning DVD's. The M-9000 was for a different project that is on hold, most likely I'll recycle it for a specialized print server (image R.I.P.) for an epson printer.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
I'll get flamed for this but if you just want a 'basic system' that you take out of the box and plug in, try costco/best buy et.al. for the latest e-machine model.
e-machine basically buys lots of parts (often OEM) puts together lots of pcs, ships them until they are sold out, then makes some new 'models.' Dollar for dollar they are pretty nice, not super high end nor crap. They are what they claim to be 'inexpensive PCs for the average user.' If you're not doing video editing, cad, authoring, or other CPU intensive tasks you can get by with a 1ghz (which is damn hard to find/buy new these days).

Asus A7N266-VM $70
AMD XP2100+ Retail $91
Crucial Micron 512MB $70
WD WD400BB 40GB $67
Lite On 52x24x52 LTR-52246S Retail $47
Foxconn Super Case Model# PC-132 w/350W Power Supply $42.99
TOTAL: $387.99
All prices are from NewEgg.com. This will be more than enough if your really just going to surf the web, use office, burn audio CDs, and downloading. It can do some encoding to, since most encoding is CPU power. If you are playing games or video editing I suggest something else. -
wow thanks lanvo7 alot, i'm gona get that system.
1 more question how much more mhz i can with overclocking the amd cpu??? -
sorrry 2much questions, but wat does on board video mean????
does it mean i dont need to buy a VIDEO CARD? -
On board video means that the video card circuitry is already built into the motherboard, so no it wouldnt be necessary to buy a video card. Same for sound.
VideoTechManI have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful. -
The motherboard offers onboard Geforce2 MX video. Which will suffice for basic applications. You can probably get the cpu up to a 2400+, but not with the retail heatsink. You have to buy a better heatsink. If you really want to overclock I'll recommend you a different setup. Oh, don't plan to play the newest games in the highest setting with that system, you'll need a better video card if you do.
-
thnaks i think the stock fan is good. if the super fan costs like 40bucks then i just use that money to get the 2600+. i just overclock a little bit so heat is not a big problem.
the gforce 2 is good enough for me. -
Why have gforce2 graphics instead of gforce4,the Asus A7N266 is outdated technology, the nforce2 chipset is far superior in performance and overclocking.I have a gaming rig with a 8rda+ ,i got a xp2100 running at a 2700 speed on 1.725 vcore voltage. If i were you i would seriously consider the epox 8rga series.Even if you got a xp1700 ,you could easily clock it to 2400 speeds.
-
jacknjt,
Send me your creditcard number and expiration date and I will build you a great system.
Seriously...do what was mentioned above about saving more than $300 and get a fast P4 or AthlonXP system that will last a couple of years and forget about this "overclocking"nonsense unless you like to replace your CPU every 6 months.
