  1. Whenever I back up a movie it plays perfectly in my standalone, but when I play it in Windows Media Player it comes out all garbled, I was wondering if I needed a special Codec for this. Any help would be appreciated.

  3. I'm assuming when you refer to backing up a movie that you are talking about buring a DVD video to a DVD-ROM?

In that case, as long as you have a working MPEG2 decoder/Directshow filter (DVDs, if you do not know, use the MPEG2 standard), there is no reason that the Windows Media Player shouldn't be able to handle it's playback.

First of all, make sure that your Windows Media Player is up to date, if not, I would suggest to either update it or use a different player like the free Zoom player, or many of the others listed under the "Tools" section of this website.

Then make sure that you have an MPEG2 decoder installed (Windows, unlike Macs, does not come with MPEG2 decoding capabilities built in) The Elecard decoder used to be a good option until they made it shareware rather than freeware, now you have to pay them if you want it to work properly after a couple of weeks or something.

I have used the Fraunhofer solution with good results, available here for free:

    http://www.doom9.org/

click on "Download", then look under "Filters" for "Fraunhofer video and audio codecs - allows DVD playback in WMP"

If you have already installed an MPEG2 decoder trying to get these to play, try a different one.

Let me know how it goes,

    Prospero
