I returned the 1200 APEX cause it wouldn't play VCD's I am happy to report my 1500 LIKES VCD's..
Did you try it in your PC...does it work there?
Maybe its slighly non-compliant (48k audio or 320 instead of 352 are common NTSC mistakes)

  3. These are standard VCD, at least consistent with the NTSC template in TMPGEnc. I get the "No Disc" error. I'm assuming that if you load it into the tray, it should just autostart?

It might be your media. Try a CD-RW, they're recognized by more players.

  5. Apex was in non-compliance by having VCD capabilities with their machines because they had not paid royalties. Newer 1500s made after last summer won't play VCDs because Apex decided they would rather not pay the royalties than raise the prices of their machines. However, you may be able to flash-upgrade yours to to play VCDs among do other things with your machine! My suggestion is to go over to
www.nerd-out.com which is the Apex forum and do a little poking around. You may need to know your serial number as well as what kind of sticker was on the box for you to know if upgrading is even possible. Good luck

P.S. I just checked nerd-out and the info you want is in the F.A.Q. section under Apex 1000/1500

  8. Wally world is selling the "Norcent DP300" for $50. Plays VCD's, SVCD's, and will even play straight MPEG's.

  9. The Norcent is a great machine. I have bought several of them, however, read the www.nerd-out.com forum about this one too, as there are ones that are good and can be upgraded and those which can't. Make sure you get the right one.
