almost sounds like nero is checking the running time of the mpeg, regardless of its size. that 764mb mpeg should burn/fit fine on 80min media. i don't have that problem with nero 5.0.1.8.

anyone know how to disable that type of checking in nero 5.5? (is it the standard/compliant checkbox?)

Nero has an option to allow overburning which will pretty much allow it burn the cd even if it thinks the file is to long. I am at work so i don't have it in front of me so i cant tell you which tab this option is under but you can click through them and just look for one that mentions overburning. Also nero has a tool, again cant remember what it is called but go to start > programs > ahead > and click on not burning rom but there is a program that you can test your media to see its overbuning capabilities. Sorry I couldn't be more specific but i don't have it in front of me. Does anyone know what I'm talking about that can give better details?
