  1. Are there any vcd software players that play vcds without having to go through the file system (i.e. Mpegav) ? I have tried i-VCD and Zoom player

Zoom player keeps saying no media when ever a vcd is inserted ?

    i-Vcd just keeps crashing.

do VCD software not work if you have a dvd player installed as well as a regular cd-rom

I want to test these programs before suggesting them to a low-tech person, who wants to borrow my vcds.

The Roxio (aka Adaptec) VCDPLAY app is pretty good. I suspect the Sony player is also good, but haven't gotten to use it in a long while. You can get WinDVD and PowerDVD to also treat (S)VCD's fairly correctly too. You can even batch script your autorun with these or using an ASX metafile you can make WinMediaPlayer tow the line a little better too (Knowing correct files/subdirectories and chaptering).

  3. I am guessing the Roxio VCDplay is not freee. Does PowerDVD work with computers that don't have dvd players ?
I tried it once and the sound didn't come through for powerdvd on my friends computer.

  5. That's one of the only silly little things with Zoom Player, to get it to play a VCD or an SVCD, many times you have to actually drag the MPEGAV or MPEG2 folder on the disc to the playlist rather than the MPEG or DAT file itself, I really don't know why they did this and why they haven't fixed this glaring problem with an otherwise superb player I can't figure out.

Anyway, is there any reason you can't simply play the .DAT file on the VCD using Windows Media Player? If you have a problem getting WMP to play these files, let me know, there are also alot of articles and old forum posts dealing with getting WMP to play and copy DATs under Windows XP, just search for them.

Sorry, but I don't know of any free player out there that will play a VCD on inserting the Disc like WinDVD, the Roxio Player, and PowerDVD will. Although I haven't tried BSplayer yet, which many people seem to like.

    Good Luck,

  6. Also, if you are creating the VCDs you are giving your friend yourself, take a look at this guide to creating VCDs that autorun in Windows Media Player.

That link is mainly an update using Nero, of an earlier link at http://www.pcphotovideo.com/burning1.htm.

Also I have mentioned how-to in previous posts: e.g. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=112993&highlight=.

Take special care with QUOTES for files and pathnames that have spaces in them, and use relative path references if possible (not absolute). Have a contingency for non-standard program installation folders and for platform differences (98/ME/NT/2k/XP, etc...).
