I'm trying to back up a dvd on my hard drive and I got an error message saying that smart ripper couldn't read an index block. The dvd is old and has some minor scratches on it. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Will repairing the dvd with one of those fix kits do the trick or is there a more complicated process involved? Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Try using this ripper http://www.dvddecrypter.com/
Also since you already own the DVD if everything fails you could rent the DVD to do the backup. -
Thank you for the reply. I will try the ripper you suggested. I could rent the title, but I guess I'm too cheap to spend the $5.

$5? I don't rent from my local stores but I did notive one here in Reno that rents DVD's for $1 per day. My guess is that must be for older titles.

Thanks again for your post. The two dvd's that wouldn't work with smart ripper worked fine with dvd decrypter.
