When I got my sony and it told me to disable the dma mode I just switched it to PIO mode and did the upgrade and it all went smoothly.

  4. red...

In DEVICE MANAGER select your DVD-Drive and under the "General" tab note whether it is 1 or 0

Go back to the IDE controllers in DEVICE MANAGER (the portion you pasted above) And pay attention only to Secondary IDE Channel (providing that it is hooked up to the secondary). Note the 1 or 0 you found listed on the "General" tab for your drive.

Under Secondary IDE Channel change the "transfer mode" to "PIO mode" for whichever is relevant (looks to me like you found the DVD drive to be a 1)

Run the firmware update. After the new firmware has loaded, change "transfer mode" back to "dma if available"

Then reboot the pc to finish the firmware update.

I don't have the Sony, but I just did this recently on my Panasonic and assume (oh sh*t..."assume") the proceedure to be the same.

    Hope this helps...
