mpeg 4

i'm not a newbie to working with vcd formats but i am new to mpeg 4 formats. i dont know if this is the right place to post this.

my question is, what is mpeg 4? i recently obtained a video clip in that format which was labled as a vcd, went to burn it and nero started to convert it into a vcd format. i stopped it because i had no idea how long that would take.

i woudl like to see this video on my tv through my dvd player but i'm wondering if i will have to convert it to vcd or svcd inorder to do it.
