I have it enabled. And i guess it speeds up your drive. But thats all I know.

DMA (Direct Memory Access) doesn't speed up your drive, it just does speed up your CPU - or more precise, doesn't slow down your CPU! With DMA, the SW gains direct access to the PCI Bus and such can write/read data from/to memory directly to/from the drive without involving the CPU.So, the CPU usage is decreased.
Effectly the HDD speed seems to be increased.
