I really like the idea behind fourty-two for decoding/transcoding DVDs that are bigger than 4.7 GB. And it works good until it makes the image... It makes an image that's like less than 600k. The temp files are over 4 gigs and they appear that they are done right, but after it rips it and transcodes it all goes away and I just wasted 3 hours! So what's the deal? Thanks guys!

If you can access the temp files and they are properly formatted DVD files (including the associated IFO and BUP files), just burn your DVD in Toast with these files.
-
its a known fact that forty two has error on the image creation for VCD/SVCD and DVD. we are all just waiting for the new version
in the mean time, you are right, your temp files are perfect, you just need to make the image youself! -
I would just use the files...but as soon as they are created, they are deleted! How do I keep them?
Jeff -
You should have them in your temp folder. i dont think they are deleted automatically! unless there is some new versoin out other than mine (1.5.2)
whereever you set your temp folder is where your files are hanging around.
IF they are truely deleted, check that there is no preference in the program for delete temp files (yes or no) make sure its no. or that under the more tab there is nothign saying remove temp files.
mine always hang around and i end up tossing the image, since the image is usualy not right (because of error described above) -
They really are deleted (using 1.5.2). But there are no preferences or anything in fourty-two. It's so cut and dry... I guess if anyone else had had simlar symptoms, please share.

Well, this isn't the same problem, but it's equally bizarre/puzzling.
I finally made a successful DVD .iso image file today for the first time. I don't recall changing anything or doing anything differently (with forty-two 1.5.2) but this last time it finally worked.
I locked the ISO disc image file and opened it in Toast 5.1.4 and then burned it to a fresh DVD-R disc (the one that came with my Mac from Apple).
About 3/4ths of the way through the "verify" pass Toast aborted with an error - "Sector NNNNNNNN could not be read." or somesuch. I tried the burned DVD-R anyway. It mounted properly, and DVD Player came up. But sure enough, 3/4ths of the way through the movie, it froze up and DVD player complained of a serious error.
The "/var/log/system.log file contained these hard error messages:
mach_kernel: SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC = 0x11, ASCQ = 0x05
last message repeated 4 times
mach_kernel: disk2: I/O error.
So I decided to test the ISO image. I mounted the image in Toast and proceeded to dump all the bits to the bit-bucket:
# dd if=/dev/rdisk2 ibs=8k of=/dev/null
This command completed successfully.
Thinking that the ISO image was certainly OK, I then borrowed another DVD-R disc - a Verbatim this time. I again burned the disc image in Toast.
Once again, I got an error of the same sort during the "verify" pass!!!
I'm not sure if the "Sector NNNNNNN could not be read" error had the same exact sector number in the error as the first disc or not. (Sorry)
I tried the same dd if=/dev/rdisk2 ibs=8k of=/dev/null test with this newly-burned disc as I had with the ISO disc image file. Sure enough, it failed with the same error (see "system.log" messages above) at the same point in the file - about 83.4% of the way through.
2 burns, 2 coasters. At $3 a pop I'm a bit gun-shy about burning any more coasters at this point!
In a weird way, it reminds me of copy-protected floppy diskettes of yore - where you'd actually get hard disk physical errors when trying to do a straight copy from the device to another floppy. Is this even possible?!?
Has anyone else had similar problems with their burned ISO images? -

Make sure your are using forty-two 1.5.2.b, I had same problem with 1.5.2
I don't know if you are referring to me and my problem, or the original poster's - but I'm running 1.5.2b as far as I know - came out of the 1.5.2b updater disc image, version is "1.5.2", dated March 4th, size is 6,953,179 bytes.
Is there a version of forty-two that actually says "1.5.2b" in the (Command-I) Info box? Inquiring minds ... -
I couldn't find "b" in my About box, but my downloaded file had 1.5.2.b in it so I know I have "b." If you keep your downloaded files (which many people do), check that to see if you have "b."
When is a new version of forty-two (with fixed imaging) expected? Does anyone know? -
Iam aware that the current link for download is the b version.
the a version did not fix the expired issue, so they made a b and just refreshed the link for a to b.
As for the update, I think a lof of us are waiting. It seemed like forty-two updates were out almost every week for a while, then we got to 1.5.2b and its been a month!
but thats not very long either. From my understanding the other project they do with dvd encoding is more of a hot ticket now for themnote the recent updates and download links, compared to forty two.
HOPEFULLY SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Yeah we hear ya.
We are putting final fixes on D+, finishing up our "Really Neat, Geez Why Didn't Someone Do This Before" non-video tool, clearing the slate for a different project that we have on deck that can't even be mentioned in passing *within our own dev circle* then thinking of some sort of forty-two redux.
We got both burned out, and in a since burned by forty-two, and to preserve it had to step away from the project.
There were more than a couple of times my mouse pointer hovered over "Empty Trash..." lol.
But yes, we are giving thought to what we can do to/with/for forty-two, without killing ourselves or completly destroying it.

Excellent!
Id send in another donation if you can get the image portion working.
And perhaps adding support for dvd-r movies that have been encoded from dvd-9 to dvd-5.
I dont know if iam the only one but it seems that most of my dvd-5's that play fine are not accepted by forty-two (no .ac3 format detected)
Investigation further i find that the audio is in .mp1 (PCM) format, whcih is most likely why it wont be accepted.
If you could add other audio support (for preencoded dvd's) and the image problem, id say the program would be in excellent shape
keep up the good work guys
and no rush, the temp files hang around and that means we can just do the work ourselves (although lazyness is nice, it makes us forget why this is such a grea program)

heheh...well
Umm...more than likely, what would be updated (by me, anyway) anytime soon would be the divx/mp4 functionality, as I personally have damned near Zero interest in the mpeg1/2 stuff.
There are many devices out there that play these files now in one form or another and I'd like to have profiles to support them.
