  1. Hi there,

I have been experiencing problems like PC hanging, applications not responding etc. for a long time when I play VCDs that are not new (with small scratches etc.) Many times I have to reboot the PC and then skip that portion altogether. This does not happen in normal VCD players - they simply show that portion distorted. What is the reason for this - is it the software application or the codec? Don't we have any software available that is robust enough to act like physical VCD players? I have used Xing 3.30 and many other players incl WMP 7. But all act the same. Do playing movies continuously on CD/DVD drives harm them (the drives)? Help me out !!!

Playing VCD's on your computer for extended periods of time will not harm it beyond normal wear and tear.

As for why computer software vcd players aren't as robust as hardware players... That fault lies with the software authors, and perhaps your machine configuration. Myself, I have never had a VCD lock up my machine.
