  1. I need to
Demultiplex the audio stream from an MPEG2 file
Replace the left audio track in that stream with the right audio track
Put the new audio stream back into the MPEG2 file
Can I do each of these steps with free software? Which software
    does it?

BeSweet? although what switches you would need, no idea. Basically make a 1 channel mono, then re-make it back to stereo, or joint stereo, take maybe 10 minutes?

VDUB can do it with 2 passes (output 1 channel, the re-process to stereo).

This is all in WAV (pcm or mp2 audio, not ac3)

  3. I just tried BeSweet. Oh my. After struggling for an hour to figure
out how it works, and all those command line options, I finally got
to this point: can not find lame module. Typical unix software.

Anyway, I'm at the point right now where I can create a wav file from
the MPEG2 file. I have to be able to convert that wav file to an mp3
file, I think, in order to multiplex it into the MPEG2 video stream.
Right? Is there a simple tool that can take a mono wav file, and
convert it to a stereo mp3 file?

Alternatively, is there a way to multiplex a wav file into an mpeg2 video
    stream?
