  1. So, sadly my trusty Apex 600A died. I replaced it with one of the most versatile progressive scan DVD players out there now, JVC N40. I have several treasured SVCDs that will not play (the Apex handled them). Most were burned from bins in TOAST XA mode without cue files.

So, I want to rip the mpgs and author them properly. The trouble is I can't rip a usable file. I have tried VCD Copy X and imaging the disks in toast and then using VCDGEARX to rip the mpgs. VCD Copy X refuses to do anything with most of the disks (errors out and then quits). The other method gives me an mpg (as does VCD Copy X sometimes). In all cases the mpg won't play at all in VLC (get a black screen and jumpy audio.)

I have tried to demux these mpegs with BBDEMUX under OS 9 and OS X and it errors out right away (something about an invalid header for the stream).

Any ideas how I might process these files? Is there a way to rebuild the header on an mpeg? Is there another demuxer? Any better ways to rip the mpg or use the svcd to create a working copy? Or am I toast?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Had similar problem when i went from Apex AD1100W (which plays toast burns) to apex 5131 (with 3 disk carasol!!!!)

i image them with toast. RENAME TO .BIN (Impotant!)
Use VCDTOOLSX (Versiontracker) to extract mpeg. then recompile with the same program getting new .bin/.cue and reburn with Missing Media Burner (also versiontracker)

it works better than the programs you tried I think

select the .bin with teh extract tab, and it should work

    let me know

see thats the problem.. people find an anomoly method that works on their DVD player and assumes its proper... you cant NOT burn SVCD bin files in toast properly, no way, no how, its not possible. It may work in some DVD players if you do it in XA mode but it will not work in most (probably wont work in a lot of software players either). I hope that listed above works for you, and sorry to not really address your question, i just want people to know that if they are using that method they're not making real standard SVCDs so don't be surprised when most players dont recognize them. cdrdao supports SOOOOO many different burners and Ross has done a great job making a easy to use GUI for it, i suggest everyone use that for burning SVCD bin/cue files properly.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Agreed. The ability for my origional player to play the toast burns just made me assume the burning method was accepted. Likewise, i wasnt planning on letting anyone else watch my SVCD's/VCD's and being it my player I figured why not.

UNTIL THE THING DIED! and i decided to get a 3 disk player. OOPS, it doesnt play them.

so what i said above, I did for all of them and reburned them. Now they work in most all i have tried them in.

    IM VERY PLEASED.

  5. Galactica you are a star! Thanks, you suggested technique worked perfectly with the first two svcds I tried. I am a very happy OS X user.

VCDToolsX and MissingMediaBurner are wonderful applications and have continued to make my life easier.

I second your opinion on accepting the Toast burns. I only ever planned to use them on my own (Apex) player...until it died! Every bin/cue burn I have done has worked flawlessly on my old and new player (which is also progressive scan). Sadly, when I first burned these svcds the MissingMediaBurner GUI didn't exist and besides, I was a bit of an OS 9 holdout.

I will use bin/cue to author all my future burns and this ripping technique to fix those pesky problem disks. Thanks again Galactica for sharing this technique!

No problem. I know how frustrating it can be when you hit a wall.

Im at one now with my post on .m2v and .ac3 muxing. Just cant get them to sync!!

SO im glad my method helped you.
I stumbled across this when i was testing my backup method for my VCD's/SVCD's I have LOTS of them, so i didnt want them all sitting on my HD. I got worried when i burned the first one, and it played, and then i went to copy it back and it kept giving me errors.

So i made a copy with toast as an image and mounted it. It has all the folders the disk had. So thats my method.

You can do this as many times as you want, you just have to reauthor the image using vcdtoolsx

have fun fixing the ones that wont play anymore. Its a time consumign process depending on how many you have. I had 50+ to do
