  1. Programs such as the most recent Sizzle and DiscomVOBulator Plus have gotten pretty good for making lossless backups, but both programs have a hard time managing subtitle colors.

I wonder if there's a hex address in the VTS .ifo file that can be altered to change the subtitle color. Does anyone know?

If anyone who can run IFOEdit wants to experiment with this and report the results, I'd be very interested to know how to handle this.

You need the original IFO file to do this in IFOEdit. In the following example the movie you're backing up is in the first title set of the disc (VTS_01...).

    1. Start IFOEdit.
    2. Open the IFO file from the original DVD, in this example VTS_01_0.IFO (you can copy this file to your HD first).
    3. Locate VTS_PGCITI and expand the tree.
    4. Select the first Cell listed.
    5. Select Subtitle Color from the top menu, choose Copy Colors From This PGC.
    6. Open the IFO file created by Sizzle/Disco+.
    7. Again, locate VTS_PGCITI, expand the tree, select the first Cell listed.
    8. Select Subtitle Color from the top menu, choose Past Color From PGC Cell.
    9. Select Save from the bottom menu to save the edited IFO file.
    10. Close IFOEddit and enjoy the correct/original subtitle color.

  3. Ah, you make it all sound so easy...

Alas, I do not have VirtualPC, and I've searched around for an IFO editor for the Mac, but haven't found one.

I thought maybe there'd be some way to identify the hex bytes that set the subtitle colors in the VTS*.ifo file, but maybe that's just daydreaming.

    A different approach:
The SUBtractor program now included with Sizzle generates a SUB file along with the .BMPs of the subtitles. A four-number code can be added/changed on the first line of that file to control the grey level of the outline around the subtitle letters. No matter what number I try, though, the main color of the subtitle letters is black. If anyone out there is familiar with the format of this color key (Henry?) and can suggest a way to force white titles on the SUBtractor file, I'd be FOREVER grateful.

Any Linux fellas want to take a look at this subtitle editor?:
