  1. I have backed up The Sum Of All Fears the same way as almost every other dvd I've done, in other words lose the subtitles and any extra audio streams. Now I find out the movie needs subtitles as a large portion of the movie is in Russian. I can't believe in a film where the subtitle is required they didn't make it part of the picture itself. So to watch this DVD you have to have subtitles on, even for the english speaking parts unless you want to keep switching them on/off, or you are bilingual. Me? I can only just speak this language!.

Are any other movies like this?

  2. help if you tell us what software you use

  3. Software? I don't think that is an issue here, the problem here is the movie NEEDS subtitles, because a lot of it is foriegn, but they didn't superimpose the subtitle into the movie, they supplied the subtitle in the usuall way, you have to have subs swicthed on when watching, which means subs all the way through, not just for the foriegn bits, unless you want to turn them on and off all the time. If I've missunderstood something here please let me know, I've only been doing this for a few weeks, and haven't come across this before.

Anyway, I used DVD Decryptor, DVD2ONE and Prassi Primmo.

  5. Denvers Dawgs, eh? so you get subtitles even though subs are switched off? or are you subs part of the picture? ( not actually selectable DVD subtitles? ). As I said I removed all subtitles ( as I always do ), obviously I shouldn't have though. I just would have thought that if subs were required ( as they will be for 99% of english ppl ) they would be part of the movie, not slectable subs as usuall.

Coz, not everybody speaks bloody English bloke.
If you're Dutch, Portuguese or whatever, why on earth would I want Dutch or Portuguese subtitles together with burnt-in English subs for the same Russian dialogue?? We don't need those English subs.

Basically, you made a mistake and forgot about the subtitles
    It happens.

Besides, it shouldn't be too hard to rip a subpicture stream afterwards, assuming you still have your own original copy ofcourse

Sorry if I confused you. What I was saying is that I don't shut the subs off because I know that the movie has russian/czech language parts.

The subs you are encountering are called FORCED SUBS. Essentially these subs turn on and off based on the content. This way the authors of the DVD can use the same movie and just switch the forced subs to be in the native language that the DVD is being released in.

I believe your authoring program need to accomodate for this. There is a decent description of this on doom9.org and you can do a search for Forced Subs here as well.

Also... Watching the movie is not enough. Most subs are embedded in the movie. So you could see subs watching the movie and not actually need them. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is an example. I did not copy the subs.. but subtitle show in the appropriate part because they are embedded in the video.

I wish I could help you more, but I haven't done a DVD with Forced Subs yet. But I can tell you that the word on the street is that Black Hawk Down, Lord of the Rings and Attack of the Clones all use Forced Subs. One KEY sign of whether you have those types of subs is if you see multiple subs of the same language in your descrypting program (although that is not always the case).

    I hope this helps.

  11. Thanks ArrogantBastard ( no offence ), I knew there was more to this than meets the eye, am I right in thinking that subtitles actually take up very little space on a dvd, therefore leaving them in when backing up would have a negligable effect on movie quallity anyway?

If the above is true then maybe I'll just keep all English subtitles from now on!

    little tip !

i did this film not long ago and the only way i could get the subs working through dvd2one was to keep them all ( not just english ).

dont know why, never seen that before.
