  1. I've browsed through several threads regarding playing backups on a PS2, but most of the information was incomplete, vague, or confusing. I'm hoping I'll have some more luck getting some answers if I asked with a new thread.

Basically, I have some old divx videos (some anime stuff, some captured home movies) that I'd like to be able to put onto a dvd and watch on my ps 2. I converted the divx stuff to MPEG using TMPGEnc 2.510.49.157, then I used Sonic MyDvd to make a menu so that I can select each of the 7 short videos seperately and burned it. It works perfectly on my computer, but of course I get the classic "Disc Read Error" when I pop it on my PS2. I've tried using (high quality) Dvd-r and Dvd+r discs. Neither format works.

Of course, the question is, how do I get this to work? I've heard all sorts of things ranging from PS2 can't play any burned Dvds that have menus to the first version of the PS2 can't play any backups. Some say you should use Dvd-r and a few say you should use Dvd+r media. I'm really confused at this point.

Any information would be helpful. My PS is a PT1133 (I believe that is a very old version). I just want to be able to put captured video onto a dvd and play it on my PS2, so if the menu thing is the problem, is there any kind of workaround if you have multiple short videos (I.e. being able to set skip foward to next video?) I've been at this for a bit, but I'm still pretty n00b. Please point me in the right direction

The problem is MyDVD, nobody here seems to know anything about it. What I do know is it creates some wierd files to go with the DVD that most players don't know what to do with and therefor won't work. I can play burned DVDs fine on my v3 PS2 when authored with Maestro or MovieFactory. Software DVD players play just about everything so that isn't really a way to validate a compatable burn.

  3. Well, I downloaded a trial version of MovieFactory and gave that a shot, but still no go. Anyone have any other suggestions?

What type of media are you using? Are you burning the DVDs through MovieFactory? Which burner do you have?

  5. I'm currently using Ritek dvd-r media with a SONY DVD RW DRU-500A as my dvd drive. I've tried burning using the trial version of Moviefactory and the retail version of Sonic MyDVD

Is that trial version for MovieFactory 2? I've got MF1. I haven't tried MF2 yet but I wouldn't think it incompatable unlike the first. Right now I'm toying with a set of MyDVD TS folders to see if I can jumble them around to work burned with the latest Nero.

  7. Not sure if this helps any, but this is how I do it. Capture, encode with tmpg dvd template, maestro or spruceup to author, and most importantly(for me at least) burn with record now max. I tried all the above except burning with nero. No go on my ps2, or old toshiba standalone for that matter. Switched to record now max, perfect on any player I could find. . I am a firm beliver in getting the right burning software setup with the burner you use. Mine is a Matishita. Just my 2 cents worth

  8. The version I tried was the MovieFactory 2 trial version. As for using RecordNow Max, I'm having great difficulty just figuring out how to burn ANY dvd movie thing on that, since TMPGEnc puts the video and sound into different files, and I have no idea how to setup a data job like a VideoDVD.

Does the new MovieFactory accept elementary streams? My version certainly doesn't. If you want a single MPEG-2 file with audio and video in the same file than don't use linear audio (PCM) in TMPGEnc. If you're only using stereo audio in your film using the other audio option should be fine. Elementary streams are useful with some authoring programs (like Maestro and Scenarist). I don't know about using RNM for burns since I've never used it, but I've never had a problem using Nero to burn folders or images. Best just to create a disc image and burn it in DVD Decrypter, that seems to work really well for most.

Check the media list on the site and see if that Ritek media is known to work on the PS2 from your burner.

I know I'm ignoring the question, but I wanted to throw this in... the PS2 was made for games. Period. The DVD player for movies was an afterthought. So it will be much pickier than other players.

But yes, good discs, and be sure you have a PERFECTLY COMPLIANT DVD to put into the system, otherwise, you'll get that lovely error message on screen or it will spit the disc back out.

My limited experience with the PS2 likes the discs I make, and they are authored/burned with DVDit! PE. Look up compliancy restrictions in the guide of DVDit! or your other software. Sometime they'll still take files when not compliant. And sometimes, some software such as Nero, can burn non-compliant format DVDs. Discs are Princo and Apple.

Just buy a good Pioneer dvd player like the 333 or the 444 they seem to play everything you can put into it.

  12. Download a proggy called ps2reality. It allows you to play DivX (all versions) on your PS2. It's suprisingly well-developed, considering it's in beta stage, includes fast forwarding, PAL/NTSC selection, 16:9, 2:35:1, and 4:3 options. Pretty incredible if you ask me...

I have had great success with some cheap dvd-r media from office max. I have a Sony DRU-500AX burner and have had great success with som K-hypermedia disks I purchased at OfficeMax they all work great in my PS2. They don't work in my phillips DVD-703 however. If you can afford to spent $50 bucks I would recommend buying a Mintek 1600 DVD Player from Best Buy. I have one in my bedroom and it playes absolutely everything I can through at it. I mean DVD MP3 disks, Copy all of your pictures to a disk and it plays them, VCD, XVCD up to 7500 kbs, SVCD, all DVD-r and DVD+r's I have thrown at it, a truly versatile machine.

  14. Just a thought.
Is there a way to play PS1, PS2 or XBox games on the PC?
    Thanks

  15. Yes for PSX, not yet for PS2 and no for Xbox.
Do not download any program claiming to play XBOX or PS2 games

  16. I think that MyDVD is your problem. It's a horrible program, but you get what you pay for. I've struggled with the same issues, and here's how I got around it:

    1. Do all capturing, editing and encoding outside of MyDVD.

    2. Import your files into MyDVD and author your menus.

    3. When ready, select "Make DVD to hard disk..." The VIDEO_TS folder will be created, along with some other junk. Remember, don't try to burn directly from MyDVD. It's burning software is REALLY crappy. Completely useless.

    4. Use NERO (30-day free trial, then $44), and burn the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder only (do not burn the other junk -- the Nero Express wizard has a DVD-Video option which does all the heavy-lifting for you and has yet to burn an incompatible DVD, be sure to get version 5.5.10.7 or later).

    5. If you are using +R/W media, be sure to change the disc mode to 2. Your burner should have a utility to do this, if it is not done automatically.

These discs should play fine in any DVD player (laser incompatibilities notwithstanding).

    Hope this helps.
