Hello Again:
I'm using TMPGenc version2.58.44.12. I was wondering if someone out there who used this version to encode their movies used the default bitrate settings or set them as something else?
Also..what does it mean when you multiplex and demultiplex a movie?
Thanks,

Default? For what format. Basically if you load the VCD template or SVCD template the bitrates are set the VCD or SVCD standard (see the What is section to the left for more info). VCD video bitrate standard is 1150kbit/s, SVCD video is 2520kbit/s.
A MPEG file is made up of video and audio. The video and audio files can be seperated extracted from the MPEG file (de-mux/de-multiplexed). Or you can take seperate video and audio files and combine them into one MPEG file (mux/multuplex).
Although less important for VCDs. SVCDs, CVDs, and DVDs support mutiple audio tracks (and selectable subtitles). Hence muxing seperate files together becomes useful.
Check the faq, read some of the guides here and at http://www.doom9.org for more info/background. Luck... -
The constant bitrates (CBR) that Vejita-sama quoted are correct for standard VCD(mpeg1) and SVCD(mpeg2). SVCD also supports Variable Bitrate (VBR) which is more efficient in bit allocation, allowing smaller file sizes while maintaining quality. The user picks the upper, lower and average bitrates for VBR.
If you change the bitrate from the standard, you are creating what is known as an XVCD or XSVCD. Bitrate can be changed higher to try for better quality or lower to get more minutes per CD. Not all DVD players support XVCD's or XSVCD's, and players have upper and lower bitrate limits that they will support. Finding the limits of your player requires some testing for both XVCD or XSVCD.
Many people do go outside the conventions to get as much video per CD as possible. Check out the templates that are available in the Tools section for examples. There is a guide on this site for fitting an entire movie on one CD by creating your own template. If you do a search you'll find it.

And bitrate only determine theoutput quality. If your source is sh!t, dont expect to to make the bitrate extremely high and improve the quality of the video. It doesn't work, just look at VCDs made from windows media.
