I've downloaded a couple of charmed episodes and now I would like to burn them and watch them on my tv. But the file I downloaded is *.mpg. Is this already a (s)vcd, and how do I check this?
And one other thing. I started to test a couple op things with TMPGEnc, but does it realy take about 3 hours to convert![]()

get bitrate viewer from the tools section and open your files in this (the free version has sufficient functionallity for what we need). Use the info this provides and compare it to the technical specs for (S)VCD as given under the WHATIS section to the right. All you really need to know are the framerate, resolution and bitrates.
Hoe this helps -
As I said, open your mpeg in bitrate viewer. If you open your eyes you will see a pane on the right of the graph display that gives you basic info like framerate and resolution. Bitrate is a little higher up also on the right. It will also tell you if it is mpeg-1 or mpeg-2. Now compare this info with the specs for VCD and SVCD to determine which one (if any) it is.

Get TMPEG. Click MPEG Tools, switch to the Demux tab, then load your MPEG. Before you execute the demux operation it will tell you whether your MPG is MPG1 or MPG2. (You don't need to demux it to determine this.)
However, just because it's either MPG1 or MPG2, that doesn't mean it's compatible with either SVCD or VCD. A good way to do that is to create an SVCD or VCD project in a burner app and then add the MPG clip to it. If the burner complains that it's not compliant then you need to reecode it so that it's compliant.
