Avery, Anybody, please help! Iīm stuck!

I can use all of Virtualdubīs functions, and even capture and frameserve with it with no problems.

But I canīt save to AVI!!!

If I just capture a file with VirtualDub (uncompressed or with Huffyuv), it plays fine.

If I then open the file with VirtualDub and save it with another name (NO processing - filters, nothing), using the same compression as was used during capture, the resulting file stutters (jerks, jerky)like mad when I play it. The stuttering is so strong that the film seems like a disjoint series of frames rather than a video stream...

If I try to encode the resulting AVI to mpeg (using any of a number of encoders) the stuttering passes through to the final result.

I can frameserve from VDub to other software. If I simply use this other software (like Tmpgenc) to save to an AVI, the size and stuttering pass through. If I use this other software to encode to mpeg, it works fine (the problem then is processing time).

I have a dual boot system. Same problems happen under W98 and W2K. I have an AIW 128 that works great.

The HD is clean and very fast.

    Somebody please help!!!

  3. Sorry I can't help, have no Idea.

I was just interested in how you set up your duel boot system. I was thinking of doing the same.

Actually, after playing around for days with Partition Magic I finally gave up and formated both of my 6Gb drives. Then I installed W2K on the secondary drive and then it lets you install boot manager, which lets you format and install W98 on the primary drive. I also have a 45Gb drive I use for capturing, and had to format that in FAT32 so both systems would see it. Now I'm at a point where EVERYTHING works well under W2K (or as well as under W9, so I hardly ever boot W98 anymore....

Anyway..... SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP WITH THE ORIGINAL TOPIC !!!

  9. Have you tried just renaming the file: capture .avi to what you want then opening? This is all I ever do and have no problems. I keep the extension of avi. I am wondering if it is some setting that is turned on when you are doing the save as part.

Psycaz: thanks, but yes, I have.

Anyone else? This morning I began theorizing it may have something to do with Huffyuv. The problems happen *every* time I save a file, but I can capture with no problems... uncompressed... when I use Huffyuv to capture, the same problems appear on the capture file... but it didn't use to be this way, I have been able to capture OK with huffy in the past...

  11. ebaldino,
Just trying to understand what is going on to try to help...
If you just capture to a file leaving it named capture.avi - does it open in other programs like Tmpgenc ?? Is it jerky? Are you showing lost frames when capturing?
Another problem I seemed to have was that VirtualDub would constantly change the darn codec back to Cinepak(sp?) so that when I made changes I would loose quality - my current system is not fast enough for that codec.
Again, not to be a pain with questions, but trying to help..

I don't know if this will solve the problem but give it a try. In virtualdub go under video and check direct stream copy, then do the same under audio. After you make you changes click save as avi. This way it doesnt change the compression so give it a try.

In your 1st posting you said that you have no processing enabled, but that's when you loose frames if your computer is not fast enough to process all of them.
I always set Full Processing Mode under Video and Audio; Also, under Options, I set Direct Draw acceleration. Also, make sure that Drop Frames when behind in Options menu is not checked. I never have problems with Avi with those settings.
If none of that works, probability is that some of the files from the Virtual Dub got corrupted or some configuration files got messed up. My suggestion would be to Uninstall the Virtual Dub, Rename the configuration files with the .bak extention, Delete all the remaining files, and install the Virtual Dub again.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

To answer some of your questions:
    - I can capture just fine with VDub/Huffy - and the files captured (whatever their names) play just fine anywhere;
    - I will try setting direct stream copy to see what happens, but then I lose the chance of using VDub filters, or even just clipping away some unwanted parts...
    - Igoryonya, I am not losing frames: I can capture OK. The problem happens when I open an AVI file (that I captured with VDub) and try to save it again.
    - I have re-installed. In fact, I reformated the HD and re-installed the operating system from scratch. I was going to do this anyway because I wanted my system to dual boot.... And as I mentioned before, the same problem happens under W2K or W98...

I think Iīm gonna give up on Virtualdub and use it only for capturing... Iīll use AVISynth for the rest...

Too bad I couldnīt get Avery to read this post...

Thanks again, and best regards to all.
