  1. I'm a newbie. Managed to succeed burning a SVCD but not before damaging a couple. I'm using Win XP Pro and Nero 5.5.8.2. I would like to test out using CD-RW first before burining into CD-R. My CD-Writer whines when it is inserted with a CD-RW and goes into a perpetual spin. What's wrong? How can I format this CD-RW to get it working? I've no problems with CD-R as there is no need to format.

  2. Is the CD-Rw setup as a 'hard drive' or what ever the name of the mode is when you format the drivel ike a 650mb diskette? In other words do you store file on this and remove them? Allyou should have to do is try and burn the disc and it will rpompt you to overwrite. HTH if not gimme some more info.

  3. Hi Steve
Thanks for your reply. I've been using my cd-writer with no problems on cdr disk. I want to use a cdrw disk on the cd-writer but the cd-writer does not recognise. I am using Nero. I know that Roxio has a facility to convert either cdr or cdrw disks for use as 'direct drive'. Does Nero have the same facility and can Nero format? I seem to think that I need to format the cdrw first.

Nero's packetwriting program is called InCD. It is on the same install disk with Nero, it is just a different option during the install. CD's written with packetwriter software sometimes have compatibility problems when placed in other systems. Also, sometimes installing packetwriting software on a system can cause other program conflicts. For those reasons I encourage you not to use InCD. If you are having problems writing to a CD-RW in Nero, I suggest in Nero you click recorder, erase rewritable, select full erase for the method and then click erase. This has the same affect as formatting the disk. If this fails, I suggest trying another CD-RW and/or another brand of CD-RW.

I just noticed that you are running XP Pro. XP has it's own packetwriting software built-in. Your CD-RW disk may be having some sort of problem with that built-in software, or if InCD is installed maybe the two programs are conflicting. You could try temporarily disabling the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and see if your problem is resolved.

Hi, yes I'm using XP Pro. Is the packetwriting software built-in within 'My Computer'? Is there a way to disable it?

I did not have InCD installed. I've inserted a second new CD-RW disk into the CD-Writer and again the same whining sound and non-stop spinning. Is IMPAI CD-Burning Com Service part of the XP Pro or InCD software?

I checked on Device Manager in XP Pro and it says my CD-Writer uses these drivers:
    a. cdrom.sys
    b. imapi.sys
    c. redbook.sys
    d. storprop.dll

Anything to do with the above drivers?

    Thanks for your help.
