  2. For some reason, I really enjoyed playing Xevious. Maybe it was the mesmerizing mind-control music it played.

  3. Does anyone remember an arcade game that has you as a soldier that moves up the screen armed with only a single shot rifle.
TommyKnocker, I believe the game you are referring to is called "FRONT LINE." If it is, that was another bad azz game. You only had that single shot gun you refer to and it sounds exactly like your description. The controller on the game was like a "rolling ball" and not an actual joystick..which made that game VERY TOUGH in the arcade, especially because the soldier was VERY SLOW. I used to love it though.

it's not Rush'N'Attack, is it? Is it a side-scrolling game?
Rush'n Attack had the guy with a "knife" and you could get more weapons as you went along..you didn' thave a single shot Rifle.

it sound like a game that i had which was called comando, good game very hoar though.
Commando didn't have a single shot rifle...and not tryin' to brag...but that was one of the easier games I've ever played. Play that for a week then try "gunsmoke" and you'll see which game is truly hard.

thank you Whiplash, but I knew where to buy that controller..I was just wondering if "anyone" on here has purchased something similar...you know..a clone from the arcade joystick consoles, such as that one?

I also remember there being another company that made this type of controller "first"...it was called "HOT ROD"..I was wondering if anyone has used either or, or at least knew any info which would make this joystick I posted a pic of better or worse then the "HOT ROD." Thanks in advance

P.S. In Comparison, here is a pic of the "HOT ROD" arcade controller. The "SE" version as showed here is $199.95 US dollars, as opposed to the $149.95 for the "X-ARCADE." I'm wondering if the extra $50 is worth it. Either way, both are pretty expensive, but can you really play games like Q-Bert and Ms.Pac Man any other way? Ms. Pac-man and Pac-Man are just two of the MANY games that almost absolutely need this type of controller to be played the way they should be.

I can't get why so many rank Dragons Lair and Space Ace up there - Even if they where ground breaking, they still are no more than a slightly interactive cartoon. Very nice graphics (for its time), but next to zero game play. (Jerk the joystick in the direction of an on screen arrow as soon as you can?!?) Obviously, opinions vary on this!

Pong. I remember when Busnell put it out so many years ago (still have my schematics from his company on how to build one). Breakout. Then later, so many more: Bubble Bobble, Tetris, Pac Man, Space Invaders, Battlezone, Donkey Kong, and just about everything else up through the past few decades. I continue to play arcade games including pinball each and every day. Thanks for the memories guys!

great topic.. i have been going everywhere DLing roms for the gens EMU and the MAME emu.. i now have about 5000 of each.. yes alot are dups but they are from different countries or are copies made by off shoot COs. anyway if you want it i prolly got it. just not enough web space to host.. Anyway.. all the games mentioned are pretty good and i play or have played most of them. i do like space invaders though cuz as a kid that was one of the first games out and i got good at it.. simple yes but still cool.. BUT my all time fave has got to be one that no one mentioned. and it seems strange.. ROBOTRON!!! that game was the chit.. it was tough to get use to though.. you really had to have good hand eye coordination as it used 2- 8 axis joy sticks one on the right for 360 degree firing and one on the left for 360 degree movement. it was awesome.. when i was a kid me and friend would play for hours and the local pizza place till we got kicked out for loitering.. paid 25c and played all day.. I have this game for MAME but it was tough too get it to play as it was intended since most game pads dont have 2 sticks and using 2 pads was just too hard.. and im to lazy to build one.. I was finally able to get a pad that would work.. i forget the name.. But it has 2 analog joysticks on the bottom and a slider etc it looks alot like the PS2 pr Xbox pads.. but for PC.. anyway. all the game buttons are mapable so i just map the pad to each game and off i go.. if anyone is interested in a particular game let me know maybe i can help.. if it exists for MAME then im sure i have it..
here is a link to a shock version of it.. give it a try .

here is a link to the pad.. i got it for 15 and local BB

I mentioned it...and you are right, that game was the "CHIT!" lol....As I said, what really used to pump me up about robotron was the sound....it was that John Williams sound and EVERYTIME something would explode or shatter you would hear that explosion as if there were 2 20 inch speakers in the game console! It was definitely "one" of my all time favorites..just not the all-time favorite for me.

@tommyknocker, no problem on sending those roms..i'm glad you are enjoying them...old time memories, huh? And those are the actual arcade roms too..not some imitation.

  17. MAME rocks. I am currently in the middle of my custom cabinet project. My favorite game? Asteroids (or Asteroids Deluxe). I also love Gyruss, Ms. Pacman, Chicken Shift, Crazy Climber, Robotron, and Star Castle.

I have made a temporary control panel that will eventually be installed in the MAME cabinet. But for now, I am gettin a kick out playing Robotron and Crazy Climber with dual joysticks instead of the PC keyboard.

  19. cool topic - there are so many, but here are some of my favs:

    Centipede, Asteroids, Galaga, Outrun

Pong I had at home as a kid and it was awesome!

This brings back memories. When my husband and I started dating, gulp, 19 years ago, we spent almost every night in the aracade - even missing college classes to hang out there. (and I"m embarassed to say neither one of us finished/graduated to this day).

I've owned every console ever made at one point or another so there's hundreds of games I've played, but it's all a big blur now...

Actually, building a mame cab compliments video creation very well--when one computer is tied up copying, editing, encoding, i just fire up the mame cab and play some rygar--what a blast!

You know you need an arcade game in your home. You really, really do.
Heh, Xevious and Zaxxon were always faves of mine.

I got a full size Xevious off of ebay a few years ago, great graphics, awesome cabinet art, but it keeps on killing me at a certain point past the 2nd mothership, grrr...at least I don't have to keep chucking quarters into it now...

For a huge paperweight to take up space in the corner of your living room, it can't be beat. It's all about nostalgia, baby! :P

    How about these others?
    Frontline
    Time Pilot
    Jungle Hunt
    Elevator Action

Ahh, games from my day. None of this new-fangled, too-many-buttons, CD/DVD stuff. Back when people actually bought games, and when mod (ala modchip) was only half of the title "Mod Squad".

    NARC
    POW
    Double Dragon II and III
    TMNT II
    Dragon Warrior
    Arch Rivals
    Paperboy
    Roadblasters
    Rampage
    Zelda I
    Mario Brothers
    Super Marios Brothers III

and of course, Galoob's GAME GENIE

Wasted many an hour and brain cell back then.

I don't know how old you are now, but it sounds like your talkin' about "SHINOBI." If so, that was another bad ass game that I used to dominate. The ninja had chinese stars to throw and could pick up a gun here and there. Then there were three types of magic. Ligtning, tornadoes, and the one where like fifty ninjas just go nuts. Another Great Game! 8)

  26. Well if you wanna know, I'm 15. Anyways, I'm leaning towards looking for an NES on eBay, now that I know it's SHINOBI. Damn that game was awsome.

I currently have Asteroids, Missle Command, Jungle Hunt and Donkey Kong. On the list to get is Pac Man, Space Invaders and Galaga! But does anyone remember RiverRaid for Atari ? ? ? ? I can say I wasted many hours on that one.
