In DVD2AVI I select "Decode to WAV" this will convert the selected audio track, generally track 1, to a wav file for use in TMPG. I believe TMPG can't do much with an ac3 audio file.
If you are already choosing decode to wav then I'm not sure what else to advise. -
Which version of DVD2AVI are you using? Anyways, i did select Decode to WAV (AC3, LPCM in the audios.

Did you mistakenly set TMPGEnc Stream type not to do the audio or make it a seperate file?

bottom right on the main tmpgenc window, if you set it to video only you'll get no audio or if you set it to ES video+audio you'll get seperate files for video and audio.
