I have been ripping DVD with DeCryptor from my DVD-ROM drive at an average of 6/8x. The ROM Drive just died (refused to read anything) , and I replaced it with a new one (Unplugged old and plugged new.) Did not make any other changes whatsoever, and it reads normally again, however, the Rip speed with the new ROM Drive seems to max out at 2.0/2.4x in DeCryptorAny thoughts on this?????????

this has happened to many. What is the brand of DVD ROM drive you bought? You list it as "generic" but what does it read in device manager?
-
the pricks who made the drive capped it at 2x to prevent people from ripping dvds.
-
Both of my burners are pretty much capped on ripping speed, they can get up to about 4x on non-CSS discs when ripping....
I have a Liteon 163D however that is great for ripping, gets up to 8x+ while ripping. We will either find a way or make one - Hannibal -
There is also a possibility that DMA is not enabled after the swap. I had that before. Please check into this. If DMA is enabled and active - you're screwed...

Device Manager lists it as IDE DVD-ROM 16X.
It is still shown in Device Manager as DMA Mode 2.
I don't have a clue as to where to go from here.Jim Petrick -
It's just the drive. For kicks I tested seven DVD drives and all but two were slow in the 2 to 3x range. The two that ran fast were both LiteON drives (models LTD163 & LTD166).

Could be the brand tho...
First I got a AOpen 16x DVD-Rom, and when ripping in DVDDecrypter I got like 5/6MB/sec.
Now I replaced that one with an LG 16x and it goes at 10/11MB/sec average. I've a couple DVD's (original) which it reads at 21/22MB/sec!! -

Wrong. They are capped to 2x for reading CSS encrypted discs so as not to create undue noise during playback. Remember that ripping DVDs is not legal so the manufacturers don't see a need for a drive to be able to read encrypted DVDs faster than this. They could have capped it to 1x so count your blessings.

If this is the case why are people ripping at 8x with no undue noise during playback.. -
I have had the same problem with ripping DVDs Max 2speed so I reinstalled windows 98 and guess what back up to max 9 speed may be worth a try it works for me

hmm, my dru500a caps out at 2x when ripping. I was wondering about that since my liteon gets up to 15x most times and is rated at 16x. Thanks for the info I am about to try different scenarios to see if this is truly the case. I guess I lucked out when I got my new system which came with a liteon, I had no idea about ripping speeds.

I had XP install and was disapointed with the rip speed at 2x. I had a spare harddrive with win 98 installed just change the harddrive, rip speed backup to 9x. still not the 16x it ment to run at. but 12 to 15 min instead of an hour. I stick with the old win 98.

Be aware that dvddecrypter has problems with Lite-on drives. You'll get a brute force error. The author of dvddecrypter says the next version should have the problem solved.
