Damnit! I just bought a pack of Memorex DVD-R's today.I hav'ent used memorex much in the past, but from the ones i did.I figured memorex was a reliable brand.
At first when i placed one into my DVD burner it started copying well. But then at around 65% it just stopped and would'nt go any futhure no matter what. Then when i went to stop burning and ejected the drive tray to take out the crap disc.I could'nt get it out.Upon further inspection,i doscovered that the reason i could not get it out was because the disc melted and partially bonded to the disc tray.
Damn i'm going to be returning these things tomarrow.

Wow, I've had good experiences with Memorex DVD-Rs but after hearing this I'm going to say away from them.

Once a CD exploded in my 48x drive and stabbed me in the ass when the face plate blew off...

I saw an article somewhere saying that the high speed media are dangerous for the reason that you mentioned. They better start making metal cases for the high speed media.
This is so much fun! -

I read on some dvd forum that both Memorex, and TDK don't make their owne DVD-Rs. That they sub contract out to the cheapest bidder, meaning you often get sub-generic discs for premium price. Don't kniw for sure but Memorex has given me trouble, and in last months CPU mag both Memorex, and TDK pretty much sucked in their test of 9 DVD recorders and 5 players for playback of the test dvds.

C!T magazine gave the actual testing of the 120 DVD's in the hands of the Swedish company AudioDev
They used the CATS-SA300-DVD PRO Analyzer.
Note that this test will lose relevance in time.
Some DVD's are made in the same factory (but can still be different in quality!!)
Manufacturers like PANASONIC, MAXELL and PIONEER don't rely on other sources and make their own DVD's
But MEMOREX for example buy their supplies from different sources, depending on how cheap they can deliver.
This will not result in a stable and reliable product as user experience and test result prove!
To find out from which factory YOUR DVD-R originates,
read the manufacturer ID from your DVD-R (DVD-minus-R)
with this file: ADVINFO.ZIP
Best DVD-R
1. Panasonic / Fuji
2. Pioneer / Sony
3. Maxell
4. Apple
5. Verbatim
6. Emtec / TDK
WORST DVD-R
1. Imation / Memorex / Princo / Hi-Space
2. Datatrack
3. Intenso
4. Optodisc

So be wary -
This is exactly what happend to me when the dam drive motor burnt out. the laser was kept on over the the same spot of the disk. i had a real melted mess of cdrom left in the tray.
