  1. I have some captured material I need to be 100% compatible with the vcd standard, which I know is 1150 video, 224 audio, bu I was wondering if 1246 video 128 audio is also VCD compatible as it also adds up to a total bitrate of 1374. Would it just be safer to encode to 1150/224 or is it the same thing?

The vcd standard requires that the videobitrate is 1150 and the audio
is 224. If you encode a vcd with any other bitrates for video and audio it's
    no longer a vcd, it's a xvcd.

The biggest problem if you want a 100% compatible vcd is that it's not
so many mpeg encoders that can produce a 100% compatible mpeg file.

Tmpgenc encoded mpeg files using the vcd templates or setting it manualy
doesn't produce 100% compatible files. The only encoder i now so far that
can do this is the lsx 3.5 encoder.

Some players requires that the vcd is 100% compliant, otherwise the can
produce some artifacts while playing. The most common artifact due to the
mpeg not being 100% compliant is green colored squares in the picture.

the only player i now so far to have this problem with mpeg files that are not
100% compliant is philips CD-i player model 210.

The number of players affected by this is very small, so it's not a big
problem at all. If you against all odds should enconter this problem,
    you now whats causing it.

  3. thanks. is lsx 3.5 better or worse quality than tmpgenc? If it isn't, for mpeg1, is there anything better than tmpgenc?

Tmpgenc is imo the best mpeg1 and mpeg2 encoder. I have tried many mpeg encoders but tmpgenc is the only mpeg encoder i use. Tmpgenc has been the only mpeg encoder for me since ver 1.2 was the newest version.
