I have a Pioneer 105 dvd-rom drive which is very slow to rip and been trouble to set to region free.
I'm gonna' replace it so can anyone recommend a drive in the UK which is quick to rip and easy to set to region free?
I hear lite-on are great (my cdr burner is lite-on), anyone confirm this?
    Thanks,
    Will

Lite-On are indeed great. I don't think there is a faster drive for ripping DVDs out there (correct me if I am wrong). They are also very cheap, around £32 from www.dabs.com so you can't go wrong

    Thanks guys.
So it would fair to say any lite-on, whatever the model, yes?
Are these easy to region free?

I have a Pioneer 116 and have also tried a 119 (new model) at a friend. I have flashed the f/w on the 116 and made it region free.

The 116 rips at an average of 8.5x most of the DVD. A few only go as fast as 7x average. All figures with DVDDecrypter and file mode.

The 119 is more or less the same (only did 2-3 rips with that). I don't know if a RPC patch is available for that, but even if it doesn't there will be very soon.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

I've just flased the 105s - error message.
I created a boot disk downloaded from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and stored the unzipped firmware (105f_122) on my ntfs partition.
For some reason my primary hdd wasn't shown via the boot disk.
I got as far as the end with a success message but the following error was above that:
    FILE CREATION ERROR
    <-[2J
    NOW RUNNING MS-DOS VER 8.00
    BUFFER ALLOCATE ERROR
Anyone know what I did wrong?

  8. You have to put the fw files also on the floppy and just run the upgrade.bat.

A DOS disk cannot access files on an NTFS file system (your harddisk).

For the DVD-ROM: I have an EPO 8216 that is not region protected right out of the box! Rips in DVDDecrypter show 9.3x average / 12.3 max speed.

Go in the UK's Yahoo and look locally for +Epo +DVD and you should be able to find some sources for purchasing one.

    I see.
So by adding the firware to the boot disk and running from there (it's a cd - I'm having a problem with my floppy drive) I'll solve the problem.
    Okay, thanks.
I'll obviously have to run from a cdrom drive other than the one I flash, yes?

  10. Correct!

And no disc at all in the Pionieer burner when flashing. It will fail to flash if you have a disc in it.

    Just tried it
I ran the boot disk in my dvd drive (G) and the firmware in my cdrw (H).
I ran the following command at the H:\ prompt:
CD H:\105F_122 (105F_122 being the unzipped file containing the firware on the cd) and then 'AUTOEXEC'.
Seemed to run through fine, ie do you want to continue' etc. but then same error message as before
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Will

  13. Sorry - but you seem to be very unexperienced with the "dark side" OS

Also, you should have read the readme.txt provided with the zipped files.

You have to type UP105 which is the batch file for the fw update when in the fw directory.

I did, as well as printing the full instructions from the source site of the firmware....

    Erm, I don't think so.
Extract of instructions for this firmware update http://www.geocities.com/gibler666/index.html
...."You will be running the AUTOEXEC.BAT script and NOT the upg5a.exe program directly".

  17. I have a pioneer dvd-105 and it rips up to about 12x with an average of around 7x so it shouldn't be the drive,

Are you sure you have aspi drivers installed and DMA switched on ?.

    I rip at a maximum of x2/x2.5
I have DMA turned on but how do I determine if the aspi drivers are installed - these mean nothing to me
    Thanks,

  19. download http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/SupportUtils/forceaspi17.rar

extract the files and run instapi.bat and it will install the aspi drivers, without these a lot of people report slow ripping speeds.

    you can also use

    http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/SupportUtils/aspichk.rar

this checks which aspi drivers you have installed.

  21. If you have a firewall installed you will probably have to disable it when you click on the link otherwise you get the anti leech thing.

if you still have problems go to www.doom9.org select downloads and then i think it's under support utils
