Just got finished ripping a movie using DVD Decrypter in "file" mode. After inspecting the resultant files I have noticed the VTS_02_0.VOB is missing. I even inspected the retail DVD and it to is missing this file. Now, the original DVD plays fine but if I transfer all the required files (sans the missing VTS_02_0.VOB) to a DVD-R it will not play. I am not even attempting to split this movie...just keeping the menu and main movie (3.9gb).
I've ripped and backed-up many a movie sucessfully, both DVD-5 & 9, to single and split DVD-Rs and have never seen this. Below is a snap of the structure...any opinions about the missing file?

You promise not to laugh?
The DVD is "The Toxic Avenger" and region 1 (NTSC). -
...lol....I never promised....Golem..just so it's clear...the original Toxic Avenger disk is a DVD-5 which is 3.9 GB's? If so, you are saying that Toxic Avenger, which is a single layered DVD which is 3.9 GB's has been fully ripped to your hard drive, but when you burn it to a DVDR, it won't play? Is all of what I said accurate? If so, what program are you using to burn? Also, are you saying this disk won't play in your standalone or your DVD ROM, or BOTH?

Well, since you didn't laugh...
This is "Toxic Avenger" with all the extras. I've got it ripped to my HD using DVD Decrypter and it gives me 41 files @ 6.24gb's. It is definitely a DVD-9 and is read as a 2-layer disk. I am in a "Troma" mood so I'm backing-up all of my "Troma" disks. Just got finished with "Nuke'em High" which was the exact same structure, actually, they just slapped the same extras package to both disks (cheapskates.
As for "Nuke'em High", I DVD Decrypted in file mode then split and finalized using IFOedit (I never re-encode...would rather add another .50 disk). This one works fine on both disks...menue and all! With "Toxic Avenger" all I need is the main movie with menues. A simple rip transfer but it seems that that missing VOB file is the stickler. It's just that I have never seen a VOB set missing a file like this! Oh, and the burn will not play anywhere (standalone, PC software, etc.)
----> Oops, let me clarify the above statement! Since the main movies of the 2 noted above were <4.0gb all I do is manually split the main movie (after DVD Decrypting) from the extras then copy the required files to each so that each disks structure is playable in a standalone. I do use IFOedit on those >4.3gb that actually require splitting the main movie VOBs and adjusting chapters, starting points and VTS sectors, etc. Also, I just checked the working RIP of "Nuke-em High", it too is missing the VTS_02_0.VOB file! I probably should be checking elsewhere for my problem and not at the missing VOB. I'll re-split the files and give it another go to -RW<----
Thanks so far for your interest, I'm still all ears!

Golem, here is what I suggest. I guess you are using IFOEdit to create new .IFO files, right? What I would do since you are missing that one vob is do EXACTLY as you are doing now..however, use IFOEdit and hit "VOB EXTRAS." Since you will have PLENTY of space, just select all audio and subtitle tracks, followed by all the vob id's. Ifoedit will then create a vobset with all new files which will be able to play on your standalone. Just remember to "GET VTS SECTORS" at the end. I know you mentioned you use this method on movies greater then 4.3 GB's..but in this case..this should be what will work on this movie..because you aren't going to lose anything...you will be selecting all the files to retain. I too have never heard of a file missing like that..but that method should work for you.

VTS_0X_0.VOBs usually hold menu stuff. They are not needed if there is no menu for that part. You are probably encountering errors from your split of the DVD-9 disk - a very common occurance.
