8x media and recorders were being discussed at Cebit 15 days ago. It's expected to happen sometime in Q3->Q4, but I guess the criteria will be when current stock is exhausted. Expect to see 8x media before 8x recorders and 8x upgrades on f/w for some recorders. Pricing is not yet disclosed, but the consensus is that they new drives will hit the market with a price just above what the crop of 4x drives had at first (between $350~450) with current models going down to $200~250.

Interesting news I got is that some manufacturers (confirmed info is Yamaha) but others also, have stopped producing CD-Rs and moving to do only DVDRs. Yamaha has yet to introduce a DVDR model. This is bound to bring the prices down by the end of the year.

Also, despite recent discussions and expectations, don't expect to see Blue Ray recorders before next Summer, and that is a BIG maybe. The official talk about it is that it is experimental, the technology must further advance before it becomes a mainstream product, etc. I think the manufacturers have invested a lot in DVDR and won't want to kill this market before it sets off. The new (first and only) model by SONY is to become a collector's item in a few years.

The above are a mixture of information I got plus some educated guessing. Don't attack me for that. Time will if I'm wrong.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

There is an excellent article at CDRinfo.com (you may want to have your pop-up killer enabled.)

I think the Lite-On 4x DVD+/- R/RW drive is going to be a HOT ticket when it hits the market, which is anytime now.
