I'm a print graphics professional that knows zilch about video but some about audio and a lot about hardware. How can I make editable certain DVDs so I can redit them in iMovie in order to burn a 'best of' version?

You will need to rip the movie off the disc using 0SEX, and then transcode to Quicktime to make editable. Or, if you have FCP, or FCE, you can use mpeg files, but it takes a long time to render.
I recommend using Diva to transcode to Quicktime OR you can use a basic AC-3 decoder to convert the audio to .AIF or .MP3 and then use a video decoder to change it to, say, .MP4 or motion jpeg.
This page has both the utilities you would need [aside from 0SEX] if you do not want to use Diva.

However, ANOTHER solution would be to transcode the DVD to Divx using 42, and then run the Divx through Divx Doctor to get a .mov file that would be editable as well.
Hope this helps. -
Thanks --- it works great with OSEX and DiVA but except for no audio? Any suggestions? Also is it better to convert to DV/DVPRO NTSC for editiing?

When you rip with OSEX, you might want to try playing back the files you get in VLC and NOT Quicktime. QT will NOT play back any mpeg files that has an AC3 soundtrack.
A solution to this is to convert the audio to something non AC3.
Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for. Please let me know if this helps you or not. -
Thanks for the reply. Playback isn't the issue, as VLC works fine. It's the conversion to .mov with audio that is my problem. Diva doesn't convert audio files {"Why is there no sound in the movie after encoding? DiVA can only encode video currently. This will possibly be in a future version."} So my problem is how to convert to a file that makes both video and audio available to iMovie.

When you rip the DVD you'll get a .m2v and a .ac3. Convert the .m2v to quicktime, mm2d or mm2c are exacmples of programs that do this. Then convert the .ac3 to .aiff usie mAC3dec or similar program. Then in quickime combine the two, open the video and audio. Select the audio and add it to the video. Then save it as a self-contained movie. You'll then have to export it as a DV stream in order for iMovie to import it.

Ive made "Best Of's" before. These are the steps I did.
Rip with OSEX
Convert to MOV with mpeg2decX 0.18
The settings you want are:
Size: 720x480
Codec: Motion Jpeg A
Crop: to whatever you need
Frame rate: 1/1 with variable framerate checked
Blur: None
Aspect: Whatever it was
Subs: If you need them
Next its audio
I use mAC3dec 1.5.1
I select my ac3 and set it to a 48 khz Aiff
Then go to Quicktime Pro, and join the two files together. Save as a self contained file.(as you can see, you will need alot of HD space)
Then import to iMovie or FCP/FCE
then do DVDSP or iDVD
Hope this helps

There is an easier solution.
Use 42 to transcode the DVD to a Divx file. run the divx through Divx Doctor to get a .mov file. Use and edit the .mov all you want, then you can export that back to MPEG2 or VCD or whatever. -
You'll run into quality issuse if you go to divx first. Divx to S(VCD)/DVD converstions are not typically good.
