    I noticed that this site uses PHPBB. I'm thinking about using it on my own site, and I love how the latest poll and the latest updated threads are shown on the front page. Is this a standard feature, or was a mod used?

    They are no standard features. The latest topics is a mod that you can find on phpbb but the front page poll have I made myself.

    The start page that you see on some forums that display info (latest posts, private messages etc.) are commonly known as Content Management Systems, although you can get them as seperate mods. If you've got some money, I'd recommend that you go with vBulletin (another forum package) & get vBHome (CMS) because I use them and they're very easy to set up and customisable.
