Edit:
Up until today I have not needed to ask for help. I have been encoding using the guides and the search if I had problems but this is really getting to me. I just can't open any avi files in TMPGEnc at all now. I switched to TMPGEnc 2.57 to see if that would work but I get the same error: avi can not open or unsupported. Any help is appreciated.

..any new codecs / codec packs installed between success and faliure?
/Mats -
No. To tell you the truth the failure is so recent that I encoded the first have of Bulletproof Monk fine and when I tried to do the sencond half it just wouldn't work. I tried several other avi files now also and get the same results.

Try a re-install of TMPG, It has been known to flip out on rare occasions.
Should be painless, don't forget to re-set your VFAPI plug ins'.. -
I mistyped in my original post. I was trying to say I switched to 2.57 from 2.510. I heard people say the new one is buggy but I never had problems til earlier today.
Are the plug ins you are talking about downloadable or already there? I've never messed with any of that before in this program. -
...but you say that no app (not WMP, not DivXPlayer, not...) can open an AVI any more? Have MS started distributing Palladium allready?
/Mats -
No, the other aps are opening them fine. I redid one of the avi's in VirtuaDub to make sure there were no errors and tried it in TMPGEnc as the new avi I just made and it still wouldn't open it.

Maybe someone else had this problem or knows of it? I"m pretty much willing to try anything at this point. Thx in advance.

Try a re-install and then go to
Options/enviromental settings/VFAPI plug in.
Set 'Direct show multimedia...' to the highest priority, I use 3.
I know you say it happened all of a sudden but a check on your codecs would be a good idea, maybe even re-install them also........... -
ok newly installed 2.59 plus....same problem. I just installed a new divx bundle 5.03 and set the Direct Show to 3, 4, 5, 6 etc...nothing changed for me yet. I'm determined to get this back working though.
Any suggestions on particular codecs I need. Thanks again people. -
Frameserve it out of VDUB as a workaround for the moment. Since you have obviously downloaded the movie, the 2nd half may be corrupt. Especially off a P2P like kazaa or bittorrent. jsut because it plays doesn't mean it's nto corrupt. You can try using the fourCC changer on it to verify it's set to 'divx'

It's not just that file though. None of my avi files will work at all anymore. Not one of them that I have tried to open in TMPGEnc will open.
-
It really does sound like a corruption either in your encoder or your codecs.
When you did your un-install did you do it properly?. I would personally do a sweep with reg cleaner to make sure you got everything Pegasys out of there, I would do the same with the codecs and make a fresh start.
Some one will be able to advise the right codecs to use (I use Nimo and I know they are,nt really liked around here).
I know I'm banginig on about the same thing but just seems the most likely thing to me.
Just to be sure, you didn't install anything prior to all of this did you.......nah, that'd be to obvious.
Keep on trying. -
You may not have installed anything, but that doesn't mean Bill Gates didn't install something. AVI's can also launch your web browser right into a java virus, very nasty. I NEVER EVER preview a movie in explorer, jsut too many movies are loaded with a virus payload. This doesn't apply to using a player.
Having said that, and assuming some codec was updated, try removing all your codecs. Install DivX 5.03, XviD, MPEG2, and mp3/AC3 audio codecs. This should do 99% of your videos ( OGG not withstanding ). Reboot after uninstalling. This sounds so simple, yet it usually works. Rebooting is important. Don't use Nimo, d/l the correct codecs from the downlaod section. You may want FFDShow, since TMPG uses this, but I've had problems with it overriding a codec for decoding. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Well fellas, I appreciate all the help.
I cleared everything and restarted then redownloaded all the codecs and software. Installed everything and restarted again jik and I'm back in business.
All seems to be in order now. Thx again. -
I have the same problem with TMPGEnc I use the latest version and also tried one of the early versions. I have problems with all avi movies in particular with XviD. Sometimes TMPGEnc even crashes when opening a file. So I was wondering since you are talking on this topic how can I remove all the codecs from the computer, since not all of them have uninstalling program that comes whit them. I don't know how to remove DivX 3, DivX 4 the rest have uninstall build in.

Go to control panel and use Add/Remove program.

i found the answer to this problem when it happend to me, i went options , environment, vfapi tab, unchecked all the boxes except AVI , it worked for me, i then started checking extra boxes untill i found the one that stopped the AVi's its something to do with priority settings
