  1. My objective is to convert old 8mm tapes to digital through my Sony TRV730. I have figured out that encoding to MPEG2 then burning onto DVD is what I think I'd need to do to keep file size reasonable and also be able to play back through almost any DVD player. Has anyone done this, and can you tell me what digital format is output from this camera (no clue in the manual)?

  2. I believe the output is a DVsoft codec AVI.

  3. Z-Boy - I am looking for the same information. My father game me a bunch of old 8mm and Super 8 movies that he wants me to try to burn to CD. What equipement are you using to play the movies on?

  4. james1234,
Can't help much because I'm just starting myself. Using this site, I have learned some, however haven't had much success with my requests for help. I have figured out that CDR's do not have enough capacity for storage and doing encoding to MPEG2 takes a lot of CPU horsepower and time. I've got a friend that's experimenting with encoding VHS-C tapes to MPEG2 and putting it on long life CDRs. I'll get the info from him eventually on encoding, then hopefully the price of a DVD burner will be down where I can afford it. Most of the people using this sight are light years beyond me and don't seem to want to answer novice questions.
    Good luck.

  5. Take a look at the Author link to the left, under Author DVDs.

As the source is analog you'll need a video capture card, or if you convert it to digital8 a firewire card. This is so you can transfer the video to you HD.

You'll want to capture in the highest possible settings (720x480, 30fps, cd quility audio). For firewire this shouldn't be a problem, for analog... well there are a lot of factors.

You'll then need to encode your videos as DVD complaint MPEG2 streams (TMPGenc or CCE can do this). You'll want some DVD authoring software to make menus, chapters, etc.

Then you'll need a DVD burner. As things stand now there are two formats DVD+R and DVD-R, take a look at:

First you need to Transfer your 8mm & Super 8mm film to to a format that you can input to your computer. James e-mail me for ways to do this
