  1. Hi,

a friend of mine which is encoding his stuff on a PC and Tmpenc gets much better m2v results as I. The resulting movie-file should not be bigger than 3,5 GB so it fits on a DVD-5 with AC3 sound file added.

Ok, he says the solution is 2-pass VBR! Ok, I think thats why my original DVD "Perfect murder" contains only an original 2,8 GB m2v VOB after using OSeX which contains excellent quality.

So, how can I reencode a m2v using 2-Pass VBR??? I didn't find an option in FFmpgX. So i tried Mediacleaner6 but its tooooooo slow!!

Do you want 2-pass VBR, or rapid encoding? On a Mac, you have to choose -- you can't have both at the present time.

you can get 2pass encoding with bitvice from www.innobits.se, but it takes time. i've never used cleaner so not sure if it's faster or not. but the lastest version 1.2.5 is not multiprocessor friendly, but the next release is supposed to be. it does work in os x though. for me to encode 93 min. of footage on a dp 800 w/1.1 gigs of ram it took 15 hours. is that time similar to cleaner speed? the m2v looked really good though, a hell of a lot better than qt encoding. you can't re-encode a m2v in bitvice though. maybe in the future?? i don't know.

  4. Well I only saw that Cleaner6 needs 17 Minutes to convert a 1Minute .mov in a 2-pass VBR m2v (720x576 PAL 25fps G4800).... you can imagine how much it will take when encoding a 120 min movie!!!!! WOW!

I do a lot jobs of encoding film sources into m2v and now I am thinking if i gonna buy a PC cause it's defenitely more time-effective (. I saw it, ... and I was impressed!!! I lost my heart on MACs and I still love them but when I see TmpgEnc and all its options ... not mention the speed on a PC to encode m2vs using 1pass vbr or 2pass vbr ... incredible and ..... the money you have to spend to buy a MAC which impresses with almost the same speed!!!

    Well, really I don't want a PC.
Is it only the machine which gives them advantage in speed????
Or is the software developing of TmpgEnc better?? Does it contain better and faster routines to encode m2v's ????

i dont know why people are so obsessed with 2pass encoding.. its better but its not that much better to buy a whole new machine altogether. I've done encoding at the highest of qualites u can get on a mac and then do the same 2pass and its not worth the time or buying a new computer.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

I have a PC, and TMPGenc is great, as are a few others for other types of jobs, but I'll grudgingly admit that a Mac has slightly better encode quality and speed. Use Final Cut Pro to capture, reencode, and author to disc. I have access to a Mac, and the quality output is better for some reason when perfection really matters (studio work for large viewing). I'd have to get back to you on the settings, but I think we use CBR. The Mac does do VBR (1-pass and 2-pass), but make sure you have both the hardware and software for it. Mac has a hardware card to go with Cleaner 5/6 to make it better and faster, the SuperCharger extra. I'm a big PC fan, but don't undercut the abilities of your Mac.

  7. BitVice in its current version encodes an hour in about five hours. It's default bitrate target is 4.5 megs/second and it gives excellent results. Results usually drag right into DVDSP with no problems. Supposedly in April version 1.3 will be released and will support dual processors. That should give 2 pass VBR in about the time of the old Supercharger/Digital Mediapress CBR one pass hardware decoders. This will truly be a milestone. Vaporware native OSX Pro version 1.5 is mentioned on their website also.
