    Could anyone explain how this works and how to compress a mpeg file?

    Basically, I want to make mpeg's available for download over a FTP server, but the file size of the mpeg is huge.

    number one, read the guides. that's what they're for.
    number two, the majority of material distributed over the web is in the AVI codec Divx. unless you specifically require it to be mpeg, then that's probably your best bet.
