I am currently on the verge of splurging for a dvd writer. I was leaning towards the cendyne dvr-105 (4x writer) on sale for 249.00 US after rebates. The kicker is that the associate there said that the blue lasers were due in about a month & that current players would drop to about half the current price. (he said the new blue rays were in fact already available online) Can anyone out there validate this. I've come to not trust what sales people say (they rarely have the right info).
I'm also leaning towards the Memorex 2.4x writer if anyone cares to offer their opinions?
P.S. I mainly plan to makes DVD's primarily for watching on a philips 711
    standalone.

I would be really really surprised if this were true, since the "blu" is to go on sale officially in Japan in April! Not only that, but the recorders will cost $3,800! Do a search on google, and I'll bet you $10 it is BS. And I NEVER welch on a bet!!!
You create your own reality. Interested in media servers and HTPC? Can we talk?

So you believed the employee? ha! It's not even a queston that this si wrong. Here is everything that is known of Blu Ray Drives.

Sony is coming out with a standalone drive, for tv's in Japan in April. Retail Price is $3,800 and the only big deal about it is that you can record HDTV signals with it. The initial price on blu ray discs are going to be $30 a piece.

Philips is coming out with a mini blu ray dvd burner to be used in camcorders, cellphones, yatta yatta. There is no release date for it and they are definitely still working out the bugs.

But.....If I were you, I would wait. Lite On, a company known for quality products and cheap as well, is coming out with a multi format DVD burner this summer with a retail of $149. After coupons and rebates the price could be sub $100 for a multi format burner. This is when I will pounce and buy a second drive. For now, I have a Pioneer AO5 (Cendyne), got it for $120 at Staples after rebates and coupons. This is the way to go until the cheap multi's come out.
