  1. Hi from Italy. I am in trouble to capture home video in DV, Vhs and 8mm format. I'm using a firewire port for DV and a ATI AIW 128 rage pro for Vhs and 8mm. I don't know the right resolution (728x576, 512x268 etc) for each format and when trying to capture I create for one hour of video about 15Gb of AVI file. That's right ?? And can I compress 1 hour of good quality in a 700Mb cd, whit sound of course ???
Thanks and sorry for my bad english

    Hi,

I cannot answer all your questions in details as I am a newbie like you but I know a few things though.

In Italy, as well as many European countries, the video format used is PAL as opposed to NTSC in the USA and Japan, for example.

The size of a full screen frame in PAL is 720x576 (720 pixels on one horizontal line x 576 lines from the top to the bottom of the screen).

In AVI, the video files can be huge (several GB) if not compressed but I don't know if 15 GB is a correct value though. Somebody else will be able to answer that better hopefully.

There is a way to compress the video and sound to fit on one 700 MB CD or, better, on a 4.7 GB DVD. DVD gives the best picture quality but you are asking about a 700 MB CD.

As far as I know and somebody will please correct me if I'm wrong, there are 2 main formats to save video on a CD: VCD and SVCD.
SVCD would give a better picture quality but you won't be able to save as much video on a CD.

I can suggest that you look to the left of this window and take a look at the "WHAT IS" (in purple) and "HOW TO" (in green) sections for more details.

    I hope this helps.
