  1. If I use tooLame as the audio encoder in TMPGEnc , do I have to covert the audio to a wav file before hand? Or is the tooLame encoder used only for sound quality issues?

I'm new at this so I'm a little confused at the momment??

Yes, you have to convert the audio to WAV first before using tooLame in TMPGEnc.

Load your Avi into Virtualdub, select under Audio: Full Processing Mode, compression - no compression, conversion - 44.1 KHz., then under File - Save Wav.

Takes a couple of minutes only. 8)

P.S. If you get a VBR warning then you need to use VDUB-MP3. If your files has AC3 sound then you can consult a guide on this site for conversion to wav. 8)

and if i don't do it? will then the sound be as if i didn't use tooLame?

i ask this because i tried to convert a short clip(with toolame) without making a wav first and i didn't get a message that something was missing. however the clip was really short and i didnt pay much attention to the sound quality...

No you don't. Tmpgenc will do this for you. It is however common advice to extract the audio from an avi to a wav and use this as the audio input in to Tmpgenc when encoding. It helps to prevent a lot of issues esecially sync problems and is something I would reccomend.

  7. Well I extracted the audio to wav first - which took next to no time - and then encoded - came out perfect, no sync problems what so ever.

    Thanks for the imput guys!

TMPGEnc doesn't encode audio to well by itself. It needs tooLame or something like it. TMPGEnc doesn't convert the audio to WAV, it converts WAV audio to MPEG-1 Layer-2 audio.

I agrre with you about Tmpgencs mp2 encoder (and especially sample rate conversion) not being the best possible. However, if you add toolame to the external tools options in Tmpgenc, then use an avi as both video and audio source, TmpGenc will extract the audio to a temporary wav file before calling up toolame to encode it to mp2. As to wether it will always get it right this way, I doubt it. It still has big problems with VBR audio wether using its built in mp2 encoder or an external one. However, the fact remains, you don't HAVE to extract the audio first, it is just reccomended and good practice to do so, and advice I give and follow myself.

I know I am just being pedantic but I believe I am correct.

I to was wondering about things like yours.
But instead of extracting the sound from the avi, I've found a good and nice solution to it.
Find a program called Honestech mpgencoder 4.0, use it to convert the avi to a mpeg-1 file, it wil take a while depending of the size and quality of the avi.
After you have done that, just convert it to mpg for VCD with Tmpgenc.
Honestech can make a full conversion, but sometimes it will be with a sync problem at sometimes with some pixel errors.
Hope you can use my advise.

Is it any good??? I'm always on the lookout for something better/faster than TMPGenc...although so far I've found nothing better

You've needlessly edited several of my posts before this as well... ambiguous???...how so?....is asking if a program is any good not allowed then??

Erm actually....I didn't claim anything of the sort...if you look at that post again you'll see that you stated a DVD was not yet legally available...I showed you that it WAS.

If you aint big enough to apologise for needlessly editing my post about Honestich then I don't really give a toss to be honest.

Anyway, I just tried Honestich and it SUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKSSSSS!!!!!!

yes --- i agree , honestech really is not that good compared to CCE basic or Main Concept or even Ligos for encoding -- im not sure if it is any faster than tmpgenc , but its quality and ease of use where no match to tmpgenc ..

I can see I got a problem now, because I'm not sure if I might say what I say, but I hope this is allright.

Just look for the program with overnet, you will find everything nedded.

I use the program everyday now and I have no problem, what so ever it could be.

I hope it helps you and that my answer not wil be altered.
