  1. I have a downloaded file that ends in the .MPG extension.
I have gathered the following specs from VirtualDub:
    ********************************************
    Video Track:
    Frame size: 352x240 , 29.970 fps (33367 ~s)
    Average bitrate: 1149 Kbps (141KB/s)

    Audio Track:
Format: 44KHz stereo, 224Kbps layer II
    ********************************************

My first question is how do I determine if this is a MPEG 1, 2, etc?
Secondly, isn't this already the format specs necessary to make a VCD?
The downloaded file plays fine with the video and audio in sync from beginning to end.
I have run it through the trial version of Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 and it renders the file to a new file and in that new file the video and audio are not in sync. There is a project setting that specifies 'Do not convert compliant MPEG files', and I have that option checked.

I guess what I am looking for is a sequence of steps that I should be following with a video file that specifies the steps necessary and questions to answer in order to take a file from its downloaded state to a burned VCD. I have read through the documents on this web site rather extensively but a lot of the material is presented with the presumption that you have done this before. I have read through the newbie section but I am still missing a sequence to follow.

Something along the line of run this utility to determine what type of file you have and the specifications of that file. If the file does not meet the specifications of VCD, perform this process to make it VCD compliant. Once file is VCD compliant, run this utility to make the menus and chapters for the VCD, burn the VCD using this utility at CD speed of 1x/2x/4x/8x/16x/etc.

I realize that this much of this information is referenced here but I am having great difficulty in applying it.

    Thanks

Compliance Check - Load file into Nero or VCDEasy
Nero/VCDEasy will check the file when you try to create a VCD. It will report any errors, such as non-compliant stream, etc. (esp. Nero). You have to, of course, make sure that these checks are in place (ie. under Nero, make sure it's not set to accept non-standard VCD files; with VCDEasy, you have to probably check the "perform additional checks" on the load page).

    ID Method - TMEPGEnc
You can identify an MPEG file using TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools feature. Load the file under the Advanced Demux tab section and examine the individual streams it finds.

    Fix
If your MPEG1 file isn't 100% VCD compliant, you can use TMPGENC to remux the file to a VCD compliant MPEG file.

    Hope it helps some...

    Moviestar,

Even though you have checked the 'Do not convert compliant video' flag in MF2, you have to make sure that the project template matches as well. In your case, make sure you project is set for MPEG-1, 352x240 and 44k audio layer II. If the project settings don't match the imported video's settings, then MF2 will convert it. Also, make sure you set the project video settings BEFORE you import the video.

I use this same process for migrating my VCD collection to DVD. I set my project for video at VCD specs (describe above, which is a valid DVD spec as well) and set my audio to 48k and check off the box for not converting compliant video. Of course the audio is different, but I want it to convert from 44 to 48k audio to make it DVD compliant in this case.

    Hope this helps....
    Have a good one,
