Say I created two mpeg 1 files both 20 mins in duration, both having 1150 as the bitrate (forget the audio for the minute), what difference to the physical size of the output file would there be if one was 352 x 288 (VCD PAL) and the other was 480 x 576 (SVCD PAL).

How do I calculate this? Is there a formula or maybe a freeware calculator I could use.

    Kind regards

There wont be a difference of filesize.
@1150+224 both will be about 200 MB.

  3. Both files would be appx the same size. The size of the file it determined by the bitrate not the resolution.

  4. Exactly.

total file size = bitrate * time

The framesize doesn't come into the picture. However, logically, increasing the framesize without increasing the bitrate means you essentially have less bits per pixel. This means reduced quality.
