im trying to re encode the movie "the bourne identity" from a d2v file.i need to reduce the bitrate in order to fit the movie on 1 dvd-r. no mater what i set the aspect ratio to , tmpgenc seems to use a 16:9 output , that squashes up the video. everything is a little too thin and a little too tall.
ie , the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are not large enough , so the video is stretched. if i play the original dvd riped .vob files (with power dvd) then it plays good. just not the tmpgenc output video.

can anyone help ? is there some setting that im missing ?

    ps its a pal version.

    thanks.

  2. If you use a proggie like Maestro, or Scenarist or Ifoedit that truely supports the 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen Spec it will display fine from the DVD. The Mpeg has to be "Squished" to fit the 720x480 spec, but in the header is a flag that tells the DVD Player it is widescreen. As long as your authoring app truly supports Widescreen it will keep this flag, and encode it to play in WS, hence the player will"Stretch" it bac to the correct Aspect and size.

Try playing your encoded video in powerDVD. It should display correctly. I would highly recommend you read this guide: http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm. It explains aspect ratios very well and is good knowledge to have when working with digital video.

i have played it in both media player , and power dvd. and the result is the same.

ive just found dvd2one. this seems to work well. and it maintains the original aspect ratio , and ac3 sound too.

i would like to find the solution to tmpgenc however.
