I have found that the best DVD recording quality is achieved by recording directly to my Philips 985A standalone (+R/+RW). However, since the icon layout and titling/chaptering have something to be desired, I have tried editing directly to DVD (VR format) using DVD Movie Factory 2 trial version to modify the screen layout ONLY. While it was a little slow to edit directly to disc, I did have good, though mixed, results. The video still looks great, but the menuing reacts differently on different playback devices. Using my 985A’s remote, all of the chapter icons were highlighted as I moved around the screen via the arrow key. However, on my Panasonic RV-31 player, none of the icons highlighted as I punched the arrow keys on the remote, and when I hit a number key to go directly to a chapter it played one chapter lower (in other words, if I pressed “3” the SECOND chapter played). Other than that, the quality of the video played back on the RV-31 was excellent, too!! Any ideas why a DVD whose MENUING ONLY was modified on a PC, then played back on a standalone recorder got TREMENDOUS results, yet when played back on a standalone player had a different result with the menuing? This might be hard to sell to a Client, as I am not sure if this is an anomaly of the Panasonic RV-31 or it will be this way on ANY player. I am mystified as to why it works perfectly on the 985A but imperfectly on the RV-31!! I will attempt to test it on other DVD players, but I thought that I would throw this out at this time to see if anyone else has experienced this and possible (if any) solutions.
